Do you think junk food should be banished from school vending machines and at school bakesales? There is concern about the growing number of children with diabetis or suffering from obesity.

I don't think junk food should be banned....maybe once a week let children be children and indulge in junk food. It is ok to eat in moderation I think

They eat enough junk food when they are not in school. So I don't feel it's a good idea to have schools load up with junk food. Why can't school set a good example and just serve healthy snacks?

I agree vampoet, children don't eat most of they're junk food at school. Its a problem that needs to be controlled through the parents at home, not at school. If you have such a problem with kids eating junk at school don't give them the money to buy the junk, right?

that would just about eradicate a bake sale because that cookies and cakes are considered junk foods. I don't think kids really need vending machines in school, they can bring their food from home. It probably would help there.

Yes, you are right. Those brownies at the bake sales are sooo good. My own opinion is that a treat once in a while is not harmful. I also think that parents are to blame if they don't teach their children healthy eating habits. I also think if the vending machines in primary schoold would only stock healthy drinks and food children would choose those. I also think every tiny step taken by many thousand schools would have an impact.

Honestly do you think removing "sodas and junk food" from schools will help with such growing problems? I have diabetic friends, and obese friends just so you know. I haven't ever seen them even so much as drink a soda or eat unhealthy food before the were this way. I believe that taking such a minimal action on a enormous problem will not solve anything, not even in the least. I think that the bigger side of the problem is truly from the parents that could care less enough to feed they're children something healthy verses fatty foods and sodas. I think that its very sad that our children are becoming obese and diabetic, however taking such minimal action to this problem will not solve it indefinately. Its very sad, just a very unhappy problem that isn't being solved the best way.

I think the intent is to help diabetes and obesity, not to solve it altogether. If these things are removed from primary schools it may help a lot of kids who might eventually become obese having ice cream and chips and soda for 5 years at their disposal. Once someone is diabetic and obese then it's done. But removing these things from small children who might not know any better might help a great deal in preventing it in the first place.

I agree with you that it is the responsibility of parents to raise children on healthy foods. Obviously this is not happening in a lot of cases these days, hence the growing problem of obesity and diabetis in children. It is true banning junk food from school vending machines is a minimal action, but each tiny step towards better health is better than nothing. Children have pocket money to spend and if there is no soda and chips maybe they will select water or juice or nothing.

I think that its all in the parents hands really, eating chips and a soda everyday isn't going to make a lasting effect on a child not in 5 year or 10 years. If you drink a soda and eat a bag of chips everyday do you gain 5lbs everytime, no. I think that its odd to think that taking away this once and awhile treat machiene away from children isn't going to help at all. Its not going to help in the least, if children cant get it from school they'll just get it somewhere else. I found this out as a young child and as a teen, if you want something someone has got it. Its just a matter of time, they'll find away to enjoy junk food even if you take away the machienes. I think that us parents should teach our children to eat healthy and to moderate unhealthy snacks with play and excersize.

It should be...in our school canteen, there are no junk foods for sale precisely for health reasons. It is a way of disciplining children and instead. a wide variety of nutritious food are on sale. Parents should likewise support this "no junk food" campaign for their children to prevent future health problems.

That's happening already where I live, they've replaced the soda machines with milk ones in a lot of schools and replaced the ice cream machines with healthy snacks ones. I think it's a fair idea. Makes me wonder though, why we never had this problem to the degree we do now years ago. Is it that the parents aren't disciplining their children enough? My mom would keep me very much in line and I was not allowed to be buying candy and soda with my lunch money, they always made me bring them receipts of what I bought. I was only allowed to splurge a little on Fridays =)

I think that's great. I heard Massachusetts is condsidering a ban also. You know, a treat once a week is not bad. I always gave my kids money for pizza on Fridays, but actually we never had a problem over junk food at home. We just did not have any at the house except on special occasions.

Ahhh....so what are parents doing about it when children eat junk food outside school? Where do these kids get the money to indulge in these out of school? I am not saying schools should load up on junk food. Kids, especially the younger ones thrive in an environment they enjoy being in. Eating junk food during their break ONCE a week will not do them any harm if their diet outside of school is monitored by parents.

Oh, I agree a treat once a week would not be harmful. Children have pocket money and if the vending machines do not dispense pop and chips maybe they will choose milk or juice or nothing. Then it is up to the parents to control the amount of junk food they allow at home.

well, my school when I was in the secondary level, our canteen doesn't have any junk foods there even softdrinks.
