Artists and writers more prone to depression?

I consider myself a writer of sort. I'm into writing literary fictions and poetry in my vernacular language. I notice that, like the other artists that I know, I suffer from shifting moods. And I feel that without the feeling of emptiness that goes with it, I may not be able to write. My angst wouldnt have been there in the first place. Is there any scientific study that proves any connection between the two?

this is true, so true in fact. writers and artists are very moody persons. actually, they are able to write about a lot of things in such a variety because, they easily get affected by what they hear, by what they see, by what they read and by whatever may it be that they perceive to be. they act and write according to their moods. just imagine if these writers and artists are not guided by their moods, how will they ever be able to come with usch beautiful pieces of work? it is their heart that minds that they paint about, that which they write about and that which they talk about. these are the kinds of people whose depression is put to better use, to an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

I think that it;s actually the opposite way around. People who suffer from depression or anxiety are more likely to be artistic than people who are perfectly happy. Writing and art are actually considered therapy by some doctors. I myself use to write and draw all the time, but since grwoing u and having the resposibilities of adult life I have found it hard to find the time to do much of it anymore. I recently went to the doctor seeking medication that would allow me to sleep without dreaming because I was not sleeping well do to bizarre and disturbing dreams that I would have on a nightly basis. My doctor informed me that no such medication exists but that she thought that I should make a point of finding an artistic outlet as she fekt this may provide a sort of release for all the retarded stuff going on in my subconsious that is causeing me to dream so crazy. Since then I have made an effort to make more time for myself, to do these things, and I have found that, though I still dream insane things still about 50% of the time, overall I am sleeping better. I too suffer from mood swings and anxiety, I have tried medication, but I'm pretty sure it's all crap, they say it works for some people, but for me it works like crap, I find art and poetry really are a great form of therapy. So don't think of it as you need to be miserable to write, think of it as you need to write to be happy.

Or maybe it's a circular thing. I mean, you write, because your depressed, and in turn, it becomes therapeutic to you because you were able to purge out your thoughts and emotions--the very feelings/emotions/thoughts that lead you to write.

Well I dont know if there is any scientific proof of a connection between the two but I do know from personal experience and fellow artists that we do SEEM to be more emotional...but I think its because we look deeper into the various aspects of life...its where our creative juices flow from ya know....I know thats how it is for me at least and its a good thing though at times it can be a downfall simply because we arent able to turn a blind eye to the harshness of existence...we arnet able to ignore the pain and sorrows of life and so on....

i am sure thats true because all through history there had been a number of creative people that have suffered from this and although i am not clinically depressed (i have a friend who is and i know the symptoms) but i do notice my moods shift (but i also am not a great sleeper either...)
