Usually I try and avoid giving credit card information. I will try to do online shopping at sites, where they allow for Pay on delivery option, where I can pay them when they deliver me the product. In cases, where I dont have any other option, i will try to use Paypal if available. Even if that is not available, then I will crosscheck as you do, the security of the site, where it uses SSL, and any signed such as Versign, Thawte etc...

I have shopped almost exclusively online for about 3 years now. Knock on wood, I have had no problem. As you stated, I too, look for the verisign and SSL encryption. I live in a small town that has nothing but a wal-mart. It is either drive 3 and a half hours (yeah, with these gas prices?!) or shop online!

If I need to give credit card information, it means I am bend on getting something, and I will get things only from trusted sites. Hence, I do verify the site and make sure the URL is a secured site and there are SSL certificates. It pays to be cautious.
