So, when you type in LOL, versus LMAO, why? does LMAO mean it is funnier that Laughing out loud? Why and how do you choose which one to use? Or does it really matter?

sometimes i use both with the intention of having them in the same meaning. it depends on my mood though :) i learned this thing when i was first introduced mIRC chat. people there are fond of using these terms.

I usally put LMAO when something is really funny. Lol if it isn't that funny myself.Of course when I started using chat rooms and talking on online messangers I had no idea what it all meant.

I use "lol" when I'm generally thinkin' something is funny. The only time I use "lmao" is when I think something is more funny than normal. I have to be really laughing. lol

This may sound weird but I prefer to use lol. I don't like to use the other one because one letter represents a swear word and I don't feel that it is appropriate to use on a forum such as this one. Now if I am talking with my friends, I will use it. To me they mean about the same thing.

I only use lol as I regularly laugh out loud but so far I have never actually laughed my a$$ off so I don't tend to use LMAO. (lol's easier to type too!)

This may sound strange or random, but I use lol when I find the hilarity of the comment is not very intense. In other words, when the situation isn't really that funny. I use lmao when something is actually hilarious; in that case, in real life, I am usually near laughter. lol is also a bit plain to me, so I usually extend it ridiculously to point where it is not even a coherent acronym. For example, I have a tendency to produce extended typos of lol such as: lololololz, lolsoslsls, lawls, laqls, so on.
