Message board advertising??!!

I love to advertise on message boards but as a public opinion do you even look? Or are we marketing to those who are doing the same thing we are? Should we advertise where everyone else is? Just curious by those who do not work at home or sell anything do message board advertisements grab your interest? Or is it too much?
