What is the matter with tv shows these days?

Am I the only one that has noticed that there is no creativity coming from the television industry any more? Television shows are so empty of any creditable story lines. It is ridiculus. And when they can't create a new show they just create a new reality show. We have American Idol, The Next Rock Star, The Next Pop Star, The Next Inventor, The Next Impersonator, The Next Model, Survivor, Now we got pirates, when is this going to end? With the shows, it is all about dramas. I remember a time when there was actually something called comedy. Maybe we have forgotten that. I remember when the only crime drama was the original Law and Order, but now we have law and order, law and order svu, law and order criminal intent, soon they will have law and order miami and las vegas, oh wait a minute that is CSI. I remember watching Matlock, and wondering how could Georgia have so many complex murders, now I watch CSI Whatever and I have learned there are so many ways that you can kill somebody. I used to play a game called clue, you know the game Colonel Mustard in the kitchen with the lampstick, my parents thought I was stupid for loving to play that game so much but they also thought I was weird for watching wrestling all the time. It is amazing that the same people that will sit around and watch 18 people starve to death on an island will put me down for liking to watch some choke slam someone else. But I am off my subject, CSI whatever is like Clue on steroids. But I can handle that but CBS couldn't stop at that they have NCIS, Without a trace, cold case, and numbers. With NCIS, they have the most ridiculus story lines but come on can there be that many naval guys being murdered on the streets of america. There can't be that many to warrant NCIS. And with numbers one plus two doesn't equal Colonel Mustard in the kitchen with the lampstick. Now anyone who has read my post before know that I love 24. But come on people there is no way that any one could go through what Jack Bauer goes through in one day. When I have a bad day, it is due to a tire going flat or something. When he has a bad day, the country trades him to terroists, a nuke goes off in his back yard, and he has to kill his father and brother. All in a day's work. DOn't get me wrong I have watched every season, and Jack amazes me everytime. Talk about cliff hangers, when that clock strikes a new hour, but man one hour in a day of the life of Jack Bauer is more adventurous than any one's whole life and he has 23 more to go. All I wished was that tv could come up with some creativity, they used to have it, shows with some real story lines.

I remember real TV shows, and real plotlines. When cussing wasn't allowed and my 4 year old could watch the same show as me. I wouldn't have to save it for later just because i'm worried about the content of it. To be completely honest, we had cable for awhile that we used for the movies, and cartoons. We watched Blues Clues, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Oddparents. We didn't watch pretty much anything else. So we had our cable turned off . It was an 80 dollar bill a month, that we just weren't using. And not having cable really hasn't affected us. I miss the history channel, and national geographic, and the nature shows. But that's about it. We've got plenty of movies if we feel like sitting down. We'd gotten to the point where we didn't even watch the news anymore. It was actually the first time we'd had cable in 5 years, and we found ourselves spending more time watching tv, than doing family things. And once we shut it off, we went back to family stuff. People are better off without TV. Unless you watch the learning channels, you really can't learn anything new from it, and the "comedies" just aren't funny anymore.

I agree with you. I've found that I don't even get into TV much anymore. There's just too much else going on for me to waste an hour in front of the TV watching the same old thing. There are a few shows like CSI that I'll watch when I'm not busy, because I know they'll be interesting for an hour, but I can't imagine sitting down every night to watch 3 or 4 hours of the same thing.

My husband just mentioned this the other day. He hates murder and police shows, so there isn't much for him to watch on network TV. He watches the old shows on the nostalgia program channels on satellite. He finds the same repeats over and over to be more exciting than new TV. For myself, I like the old original black and white Lassie for old and House for new. The occasional CSI whatever gets into my viewing. Mostly, I don't care if the TV is ever on.

In our country it's like the same. It's like repeating all shows or just like you say idols.Cooking with the stars, dancing with the stars,so you wanna be a popstars.
In the old days when i was young in the weekends there were tv shows for children in the evening so they could stay up later than normal. There was the mini playback show and some other programs which made the dream of a chld come true.
We don't have that children who want to stay up are forced to look at horrible agressive movies because there isn't anything else.

I remember several years ago when my son told me he had just seen a naked butt on NYPD Blue. He was about 16 at the time and he freaked. There is so much profanity, soon the F word will be able to be used. I agree, what happened to shows like Gunsmoke? A little drama, a little comedy, made for a good tube flick (so my parents tell me anyway).

Interesting post. I never watch American Idol...the show about dancing is opposite it. LOL. Never watched the next inventor/impersonator, survivor, pirate...forget it. Don't watch law and order. Watched CSI's first season, but they got a little too graphic for me so skipped all of the rest of them except I've watched NCIS from the very beginning. Love Mark Harmon. Watched 3 seasons of 24, but got behind and never got caught up, but love Keifer. You must be right...I watch a lot of re-runs. I love Stargate SG1 and all of the Star Trek series they keep playing. I don't like and never watched stuff that is really popular like Se* in the city or Friends...I don't even watch Desperate Housewives despite being a Terry Hatcher fan. I don't approve of or enjoy all of the innuendo and swapping of boyfriends or bedroom scenes. I must be showing my age.
