Ideas for dealing with allergies while pregnant?

I'm about a minute away from reaching up my nose & removing my sinuses. For at least a week now, I've been so congested & sick from seasonal allergies. I suspect it's the high pollen count causing my misery. I can't seem to sleep more than an hour or two at a time, then I wake up with coughing spasms and my nose so blocked I'm grasping for breath. Which in turn triggers my gag reflex and I end up getting sick. I've blown my nose so much I look like Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. And my appetite is gone. I was taking Benadryl, it helped me sleep a little but that's about it. I was told I could take Claritin, so I picked that up yesterday. I've taken it twice so far (it's a slow release medicine you take once a day) and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I'm taking vitamin C & garlic supplements, so I can hopefully avoid getting a sinus infection. I've tried hot tea, Vick's vapor rub, and saline nasal sprays; nothing is really making much difference. Anyone have an idea I haven't tried yet?

I took Actifed when I was pregnant to clear up my nose, and it worked really well. Actifed is safe to take while pregnant, and you can get it over the counter. I'm not so sure Claritin is safe for pregnancy, so you might want to talk to your doctor before taking much else. The local honey suggestion really does work, but your not supposed to give honey to babies as it causes botulism. Should be fine for pregnancy though.

Thank you for your response- sorry it took so long to say so. I ended up almost bed-ridden by it before it finally started letting up. I'm still just a little congested, but much better than I was before.

First, make sure you are allowed to take ANY cold medicines while pregnant. Have you tried using those masks (like the ones they give asthma patients for vacuuming)? It might help. Something to start for long term relief... start using local honey. You'll have to read the labels to see if they're local. If you can find any local bee-keepers, they would have local honey as well. I have horrible allergies and needed allergy shots. You might need to check with your doctor about that if nothing else helps.

I should have specified that the Benadryl & the Claritin were OKed by my midwife. I forgot about honey! I've read that before, thank you so much for reminding me. There is a bee keeper not far from me, I'll pick up some tomorrow. Not sure what masks though. Just the little cloth ones that slip over your ears & cover your mouth? Doctors where them & Micheal Jackson use to wear them in public a few years back- are those the ones you mean?

Yes, those are the masks. Those masks should help filter out some of the allergens

Hi Eden! I am a home environmental specialist.. most of us aren't aware that we live in a very dirty home though we clean it everyday... Your having allergies has something to do with the quality of air you have in your home and of the places you are going to... And you're not being able to sleep well is a big factor why you can't get rid of your allergies... I would suggest you try the Amazing Rainbow Hydrocleaner which most doctors recommend for people with asthma and allergies.. visit our website www.rainbowsystems.com and call me for a FREE NO OBLIGATION Demo of the product call me at Telephone Number 2950339 for appointment. look for Azon

I'm actually familiar with the Rainbow system, a good friend of mine has one that I borrow from time to time. I haven't found that it makes much of a difference though.
