i am currently looking to expand my son's book collection. He loves books and will sit there and let you read to him all day if you would do it. I am trying to get an idea of some good childrens books to go get him. Got any ideas? what was your child's favorite book?

My son has some Sesame Street block books that he loves. We got them when he was about 9 months old, and they immediately became favorites. They are really cute, and just have a few words on each page. He's 16 months old now, and has the two favorites completely memorized, so he sits there and "reads" his books to himself. Then he stacks them up. When he was teething, he liked to chew on them. They are cloth covered foam, and are washable, so it was okay. They also have a page that makes noise in each book. They have crinkle paper, a rattle, or a squeaker.

i agree with you that these books are really very interesting ones for children and very durable, too. by the way that you describe them, a child will not find it easy to destroy these books. chances are, he will still be able to enjoy them for much longer periods. my kids will still browse through those children's books they used to have when they reminisce those good old days of childhood.

We bought ours on base...I've never seen them at Walmart or anywhere like that. You can get them online, though. The price seems a little high maybe, but my son really likes them, so you might still consider them. Oh, they are on sale! I just pulled up the website for you. I'm not sure what the shipping is, though. Anyway, here's the site.... http://www.softplayforkids.com/category.aspx?categoryID=1080

I see you already have suggestions for Goodnight Moon. That was always a kid's favorite. The Berstein Bear series was always cute and interesting and they always had a moral to the story. Dr. Seuss is also great! Remember Green Eggs and Ham? A classic! It's great that he is so interested at a young age. Keep it up and he will make reading a habit that will stick with him while growing up! You can learn so much from reading! It also makes starting school much easier on kids too. They are a step ahead of the class.

My favorite books when I was younger was "Where the Wild Things are" by Maurice Sendak. I also loved "Green Eggs and Ham", "1 fish, 2 fish, Red Fish, blue fish", and "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Suesse. a more recent book that I think is really fun and cute is "If you give a Moose a muffin" by Laura Numeroff. I love moose so I think this book is a hoot. It's so great that you want to foster your son's love for reading. I was reading chapter books by the first grade so I can appreicate a love for reading.

How old is your son? My son loved the Dr Seuss ABC's and Popcorn (this was from a book club many years ago and maybe out of print now, but is worth the search). Good Night Moon was a great bed time book and Love you Forever was a comfort book.

i cannot remember all of them anymore. there were sorts of fairy tales, math books which presented learning basic numbers and counting in games, some books about animals and plants in big colored pages...but, the ones which proved to be most beneficial were those voluminous book of knowledge books for children. they never tire reading the books day after day until the pages got so torn i cannot see them around anymore these days. yes, no more remnants of the book remaining. that's how read those books came to be.

When I was a kid, I loved Maurice Sendak books. My mother said that she would often find me just staring at the pages and looking at every bit of his drawings. I think the Little Bear books were my favorties because I thought the bear was really cute and I liked the old fashioned look to the drawings. My advice is to look for books that have both a great story and great pictures. I have a little sister who is four now and I always get her books for her birthday. She is a huge fan of the Disney princesses, but I try really hard to expand her horizons and get her books that are more than just a re-hashing of a movie that she likes to watch. I love to buy books at a store by me called Barefoot Books. They are actually a publisher and they focus on books as art and educational tools. You should check them out: http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/home.php I'm planning on buying her the ballet stories book or even their princess book yet. I like the princess book because it has princess stories from all over the world.

The Eric Carle books are generally great child pleasers. "The very hungry caterpillar" and others. You can't go wrong with Dr. Suess because of the silly words that you can do fun things with to make reading to him fun and funny. There are some great books at the library about this very topic. These books will list them by age groups, books that are great to read aloud, by subject area, theme area..... you will be amazed. My son personally loves "Good Night Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown.

Hi nicolecab! when my son was just 3-6mos. old he loves watching the pictures from the book of Little Bert's Book of Number's (Sesame Street) (Toddler Books), that book is colorful with the pictures of balloons and animals, but when he's already 2years old we go to the bookstore and let him look for the book he want he selected a book with a title "A Duck's Luck!". It is the story about the little duck with black feathers on her back that lives near the rock with her mama duck and her 4 siblings, he loves listening to the story and at the same time enjoyed looking the pictures of ducks and until now that he already knows how to read he's the one reading it now..

Have you tried Enid Blyton? She has a great set of fantasy books and children's adventure books, I loved them while I was growing up. I'd recommend the series on the Magic Faraway Tree and The Enchanted Forest. She has a lot of shorter stories that are equally entertaining though. I also remember having read this collection of stories for kids from all over the world... If you can find something like this, I'm sure he'd really enjoy it. Thank you for starting this discussion and for raising a promising bookworm :) The world needs more kids that like reading better than television.

As little babie my boys loved the book EYES, NOSE,FINGER AND TOES, BY JUDY HINDLEY. And now that they are a bit older the love reading the KISSING HAND. The first book is a fun book, my sons memorized early and always wanted to read it for the fun peek aboos and the second one is a story about comforting a scared raccoon going to school on his own. My kids will spradically come up and kiss my hand. They are really cute.

I do not have a child yet because I am only a teenager. But my advice to you is that buy him some manga books. This will help him learn about funny stories and just keep his life attached to anime and not in drinking or smoking or any other bad habits when he/she grows up. Ask a doctor, manga books really helps influences children especially when they start reading it at a young age. Manga books are japanese books that are top selling books for all times.
