Fruit Flies or Honey?

So goes the old saying "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar." Now my problem: I have fruit flies,. I've done my best to get rid of all the places they can hatch but I am not physically capable of keeping up with the trash and dishes as often as they need to be kept up with (long story there). Anyway, does honey really catch flies? If so, what about fruit flies? I'm afraid if I put it out, it will only give them more food. Maybe there is some other sort of homemade solution for this? I can't find fly paper anywhere in the local stores. Thanks!
