Pet iguanas

My son came home and told me that someone in his class has a pet Iguana, however he also told me they don't keep the iguana in a cage or tank, it runs free thru the house?! He's only 5 so I am thinking maybe he's confused. I asked him numerous times and he said yep, his friend's iguana is loose, no cage. So has anyone done this or heard of this, to just let them loose? How would you even find them?

Some Iguana's are pretty big. Some are the size of a cat. If it did run around, I'm sure they could find it. What I would be afriad of is their tail. I been slapped by one before and it hurts pretty bad and they don't always mean to slap you with their tail. I'm sure your son has the story right, some people let them out all the time to wonder around. I knew someone that actually let his snakes out and he let them just roam around. I never went into his house unless they were all caged. LOL! I would talk with your son again though, and tell him to be careful, even if it's a pet, keep your face away from the tails. LOL!

I've never heard of iguanas being loose but I have heard the dog comparison so I'm sure it's possible. The other thing I'm thinking is that the iguana is let loose a lot just not all the time. To your son's classmate, having the iguana out for most of the evening might SEEM like all the time. Then again 5 year olds misinterpret things pretty easily too. I still remember my ex-hubby coming to school at the age of 5 and telling all of us that his mom and dad sleep in naked pajamas and that his mom has to sleep on top of his dad because their bed is too small. LOL

I think you can buy iguanas in pet stores. I have seen them in the wild and around people's property in Costa Rica but here where I live I know a couple whose son had one but it was mostly kept in a tank.

I don't have an iguana, but your son is right. A lot of people who own iguanas do not keep them in cages. They can get pretty big so it isn't really hard to spot them. Iguana's are like the "dogs" of lizards. They don't hide in tight spaces, they like to have space...and they protect their territory.

My iguana sits on the top of his cage. He goes outside once a day to go potty and to get some sunshine.

My best friends ex aunt has one named Sally. I used to have to take care of it and I learned the hard way LOL. Their tails are like whips and I am glad the scars are gone--but when she was calm, Sally was a sweetie. Johnna www.blogcharm.com/Colorsofink

My sister and brother-in-law have two pet iguanas, but they live in a giant aquarium. They'd never let them run around the house, because they could get into too much. Besides, the dogs and cats they have would go after them. One year though, one of the iguanas got loose and jumped into the Christmas tree.

yes! my friend had his loose ALL THE TIME...he had one of them BIG ones though, so he was easy to find! and he would put it in its cage at night or if it made someone uncomfortable. he was HUGE!! and then my roommates, well one had a snake, one had 2 iguana's, and i had a turtle, (we were a reptile home, haha) BUT the iguana's were out here and there. they were different kinds though, not like my friend's big one. one was a bearded dragon, and one was some little nute i think it was called? i let my turtle out all the time too, BUT had to watch him cuz he would just poop whenever, so i kept a close eye on him, plus i didn't want him to fall on his back (that can kill them), so he was ALWAYS in my view, but he loved to get out and run and climb!! at our pet store in one of our malls, they have a REALLY HUGE one that sits out on the lights in the rafters. and they just put him away when they close! otherwise he just sits up there and watches everyone and sleeps. i'm sure they take him down for his feedings and such (although not sure what he eats and how often). they must not poop like the turtles do though, or else he wouldn't be up in the rafters like that, hovering over everyone' heads! LOL!!
