I know the reason is out there somewhere because I knew it at one time but why do hurricanes have to be female names? Once in awhile I'll hear a male name but 9 out of 10 of them are female.
Wouldn't it be nice if they started using animal names like Spot, Fluffy, and Muffy? I think that would be cute don't you? I realize Hurricanes are far from cute but I think it's time for a name change for them.
Can you think of other things that Hurricanes could be named after like colors or something else?

LOL...there's a wicked sense of humor in you---Hurricane Fluffy?? LOL
Actually the first hurricane that has already started is named Hurricane Barry --as for why the hurricanes are predominantly female names I have no idea...could it be that we women can be more stormy than men?? Hehehe

Thanks for the laugh....Hurrican Fluffy looks a lot funnier when someone else writes it....lol....I think men can be just as menacing as women though.

Prior to 1950 storms weren't officially named at all. From 1950 to 1952 they were named simply Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, Easy, Fox, George...not very imaginative, but it sufficed. From 1953 to 1978 someone decided to use only female names. Finally, in 1979, they started alternating between male and female names.
Hurricanes are named alphabetically, years in advance and starting the alphabet over each year.
I suggest you write the people responsible for giving names of hurricanes c/o WMO (World's Meteorological Organization) and suggest to them using animal names maybe or names of celebrities.
Hurricanes that cause severe damage or kill and injure many people are remembered for generations and some go into hurricane history.( National Hurricane Center). The country most affected can request that the storm's name be removed from use to avoid confusion caused by a future storm having the same name. These are also called retired hurricane names.

Thanks for all of the information. I'm old enough so that I do remember when the names were simple.

Your right, I just remembered that they now alternate them. I think it would be nice if they just gave up using names. Another of the little things in life that irks me this morning...lol...

I am pretty sure that it is at one time female name and the next time male. It used to always be female names as storms are feminine, just as buildings, countries, and boats are... I was never offended by this - but I guess that some women activists were and that is why we now have everyother hurricane named for a male.
I think it would be neat to have them named after infamous villians - of course the majority of them were male so that probably won't fly.

Here's a site that has a lot of hurricane info for you, including how the storms get their names.

Hurricanes alternate between male and female names with each storm, not just each season.

I could never understand why they had the different names for hurricanes. And there are so many female names! I bet a man makes the names up. I dont know what else they should use, but i would prefer to not have so many female names
Best wishes to you
