My daughter just starting to work as Nurse-RN in Psychiatry asked me: Why these patients are not receiving visitors from family and friends?? **I explained her, in our society Psy dept. are very "Tabou", in general people are affraid of Psychiatrists or to be a day themself in a Psy dept. room for depress, burn-out, bipolar... A day, if you know that a friend or a family member is in Hospital in the Psychiatry Dept.: will you go to visit that person?

it sickens me that as we open the 21st century we are still generally scared of mental illness, a form of illness that every single one of us will suffer from at some point in our lives. I have no problem visiting someone who is sick but i am fascinated by the way people reach the decision not to visit. Maybe they are insecure in their own mental health?

The unknown. It is one of people's greatest fears. It's sad.

I worked in a mental hospital for a while. Visitors were only allowed on the weekends, and only during a 3 hour period. They had to be on a special list that was approved by the hospital and the psychiatrist on their particular case. I've seen some visitors come that were not on the list be taken to jail because they made such a fuss to get in illegally. Also, if the person had harmed themselves, all visitations are stopped until the patient is no longer a danger to themselves or others. It hurt to see some patients not get visitors, but that could have been part of their downfall. They didn't ever have anyone to talk to or lean on. Also, a mental hospital is scary to a whole bunch of people. It's sad, there is just such a huge stigma out there.
