Think about this sentence? It is so strange i met this weekend with a few friends, that brought a few new friends and we started talking about different topics of life. Some of those people said, that if i will check it out, i will notice that most people that play basketball are lesbians. I just told them that i think that this is rubbish. That most of the people just stereotype things, and i do know women that enjoy basketball playing, and they are no way near what they described, they like men, and they have a family. Not that i have trouble with people that prefer the same gender. I told them that i also heard that people call lesbians 'vegetarian' and claim that all women that are working at the field of computers and science are lesbians and that is also rubbish. Where do people get all of this stereotypes? why do they need it? If i would like to play basketball would people categorize me as a lesbian? LOl. What do you think?

i dont think so that every female basketball player is a lesbian.this is utter rubbish.I never heard such thing though i take a little interest in this game.people just stereotype such things just to spice up the matter, to gossip and make it a rumour.

this just shows how ridiculous stereotypes can get. stereotypes are stereotypes, and therefore we wont be losing anything by not believing in them.

I have heard a few sterotypes, but this is the first for this. I figure sterotypes have to come from some truth. It may be a very samll bit of truth but some is more then none. In this case maybe one or two women basketball players are lesbian, so it grew from there.

What do people connect basketball players with lesbians? They are world apart. I don't see the rational behind this accusation. I am not very clear about the characteristics of a lesbian but to my knowledge they are an item with the same gender. A person who has a failed relationship will normally turn to be a lesbian as what I have noticed during my college days.

Well people usually claim that most lesbians are athletes, and that is where this sentence comes from, as i stated it does look too me like rubbish. That is interesting what you said zandi, about women that prefer women, because of a failure with men. I never saw it this way. i know many women with problems with men that did not turn to be lesbians. But there is a possibility that there are women that are more comfortable with women due to an abuse of men.

That is definitely not a true statement and I think that your friends were just making that up. That is definitely not a good statement to make on their part and you are right that what they said is rubbish. It seems like your friends think that all women are lesbians, which again is not true. Maybe your friends were brought up thinking that way but it is not right to stereotype people that way. I certainly do not know or have heard of any female basketball players being lesbians.

People indeed are strange with their thoughts and loose tongue. I have no idea why they say that. Unless they feel that a women should be thin and small and in a dress cooking and having babies.

Well i understand that there are people that do know alote of lesbians that play basketball, but it does not mean that all the women that play this game are lesbians. Well i guess people do like making those unresponsable comments about everything in life.

What a load of absolute rubbish. This is stereotyping of the worst kind, something I get very cross about. It's like saying that all male nurses are gay, all fat people are greedy pigs and all blond women are stupid. I wish I could understand why people make these sweeping statements and attach such silly labels to people

I don't think that's true. I played Basketball in High school and it's just sports just like men. If they think that then men are gay and which we know they are not it like I said it a sports. Where did you hear all this and you are right it's rubbish. People has got where they judge others and I don't like that.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with being a lesbian, but to categorize one group of women who play basketball as being all lesbians is indeed rubbish. Unfortunately, stereotypes go as far back as the bible itself and are so ingrained in our culture that there's no way to get rid of them, except to choose to ignore them as much as possible.

I would have to disagree with that comment because I i have reald about alot of players that have families and they still play basketball alot of people think that because a woman plays basketball just like men that she can't be attravtive to them that makes no sense at all. I do believe that basketball is just a sport and just because women play them does not make them lesbians

I had to laugh at this statement, does that mean that men who play women sports or do womens work are gays? People are too quick to put labels on people and once someone has a label attached it's damn near impossible to get shot of it. Take Stargate for instance I know it's fictional but Sam Carter the geek she's a woman, she's definitely not a lesbian, with her boyfriends on show. I think people have a funny way of thinking, it's a shame people need to stereotype, it's not helpful in fact it can be quite damaging.

This is an incredibly biased and ignorant stereo type. One of my pet hates is sweeping generalisations. I agree with the points you bring up... there is no way you can catagorise any one group of people into any single box. People are so different, and just because someone is gay doesn't make them a 'basketballer' or 'vegetarian.' Just like you can't say a married women with kids is a 'watcher of soaps' or 'a gossip.' I, for one, are glad of the diversities in every sub-group of people we have on the earth!!!

it is strange that people make stories up like this. no matter what job we have or what sport we play doesnt mean we are a lesbian

I think some people get that ridiculous opinion because of the old gender roles. Girls should leave certain things up to men, and that total crap..and that any girl doing a job that was percieved as a guy's was somehow not feminine..which is total sexist bull. Sadly, sometimes the false opinions get passed onto innocent non-sexist people..amazingly.

while I do not keep track of the doings of female basketball players I would hesitate to make a generalized broad statement like that. I am sure there are at least some basketball women that are feminine outside of the sport they play. Stereotypes and rash judging people is something I must try to avoid.
