A Polish man woke up from a coma after 19 years. Wow! Doctors had given him only 2 or 3 years to live. And I've heard it said that the longer a person remains in a coma the less likely that they would come out of it. Whose report will you believe?? When he fell into a coma in 1988 the communist ruled Poland. Its now a whole new world now. He credits his wife for his survival. What would you do if a loved one fell into a coma? If it were a spouse, would you stick around? How long?

I would like to think that I would stick around and that I would be there to wait for the one I loved to come out of the coma . There have been different doccumented cases where one that is in a coma does come out of it years later and how horrible would that be to come out of a coma and everything around you to have changed and for the person you loved to not be there for you any more . To see all your children grown and to see all the new technology that would not have been a part of your life before . This would be really terrrifying to see how much everyone had grown older looking not to mention how you yourself would have aged and to realize that so much of your life was spent in a coma and that while you slept , life still went on without you . I would like to think that I would wait around for as long as I had to but can't say for sure as I have never been in this situation where one is waiting for years for something that may never happen and you would still want to have a life especially for someone who may never have had children or anything else they may not have got to experience while waiting for the one they loved to wake up .

This being a hypothetical question one would hope they would stick by their loved on. But you never really know until you were actually in that situation. I'm sure we would all hope that we would take the high road and be there for that person. You make some really good points, especially about if you were a woman or even a man who one of their desire in life was to have children. It would be very hard to wait in that case. Look at what happened with Terry Schivo(sp?)

Wow! Nineteen years is a long time to be in a coma. Life must be so different. Poland has changed agreat deal since communism ended. We are six years into a new century as well. I am so pleased that his wife stood by him. Many people would have given up hope of their spouse getting out of the coma. I would probably give up hope after 10 years. But then I would very much regret this.

Yes to him its a whole new world. In the article he marveled at how people are walking around with cell phones. I'm still marvelling at that!!! I'm a receptionist at a hospital and I've decided if someone comes in and kept talking on their phone I will ignore them until they get off. But that's my pet peeve. Anyway back to this miracle. Because that's just what it is. He came back to life. Can you imagine how he feels? Everything is new to him. He spent almost 2 decades asleep! I can't fathom that. Well I'm so glad that it has happened for him and his family.
