I have a Red Eared Slider, or RES, turtle. It is an aquatic turtle that has the potential to reach 10-12 inches in length. It is quite enertaining and I keep it in a 55 gallon lon tank which he will grow out of pretty soon. The whole setup cost me about $300 lol And he shares his some with a Golden Gourami which I am well aware it will be eventually eaten lol Do you own a turtle, terrapin, tortoise?

i have had now 3 red eared sliders and they are great my first we had for almost 10 years. they are very nice to have. he will ot out grow his tank he will grow as big as the tank lets him. if he is at the size you want then just leave him in that tank. if you want him bigger then get a bigger one. we had our turtle in a 15 gallon tank for years and he went from about teh size of a quarter to a little bigger then my fist. i went out and bought a turtle tank made just for turtles and it is also 15 gallon. it stayed the same size for years. there are alot of sites on the net that you can read.

first off i do take your response offensive. i HAVE HAD 3 res not DO have. my poor turtles most be sick due to poor care! and cramped conditions. how do you get that my turtle is poorly takin care of? i take very good care of my turtle.. thank you i know i had the same turtle in the same size tank for 10 years and it got no bigger. there for did not out grow his tank. your also sure of a lot of things you have no clue about. (what i can and can't afford) along with a couple other things oh and just to let you know my turtle will be staying right where it is. so as you can see i did take your response offensive but i think you would to if i was telling you that you took poor care of your animals!

Oh my god, your poor turtles! All of that information is totally not true. That sounds like the kind of trash an employee at Petco would tell you :-( This a complete untruth and I am positive you are confusing this with the abilities of some fish to grow to the size of it's tank (which can still cause some problems and eventually kill it). Your poor turtles must be very sick due to poor care and cramped conditions, also they may have a stunted growth due to poor care (NOT due to small tank!). A 15 gallon tank could probably last a red-eared slider baby for about 6 months before having to upgrade to a larger tank! Your turtles WILL continue to grow until they are far too large for a 15 gallon tank (I am sure they already are). Please don't take my response as an offensive one but rather as a helpful one. I am sure you do not have a large 100+ gallon tank to keep 3 RES in at the moment and can not afford one. I am also quite sure you won't be able to provide EACH one with atleast 100-120 gallons of water when they grow to their full size of 10-12 inches (and tank size won't stop them). If I were you I would adopt them out immediately and please stop giving this wrong information out to others, I know you don't know any better. If you would like further information on turtles ask at www.turtletimes.com/forums and they will verify what I told you. Good luck adopting out your RES! Thank you for your response :-) Rated +.

Alrighty I see you took my response the wrong way, I don't blame you because I often go of on a rant when I talk about turtles. hehe I did not say that you took poor care of your turtles, maybe you bought them from an owner or chain store that kept it in poor conditions previously. I take it your turtle has been poorly taken care of due to the fact that it did not outgrow a 15 gallon tank in 10 years. It must have a stunted growth (which is usually derived from the poor care or lack of proper nutrition). A normal healthy red eared slider should have outgrown a tank of that size within a few months. And why do you assume that I have 'no clue' what I am talking about? I researched this specific turtle (RES) for an entire year before purchasing my turtle and continued to do so for another year. I have 2 years of research and experience under my belt and I think that qualifies me as 'having a clue' about this subject. I am not saying you are dumb but I am saying that your source of information is not correct and if your turtles had a stunted growth than your 10 years of experience are not worth very much. I recommend that you visit www.turtletimes.com/forums as that is where I got the majority of my information and the members and experiences/knowledgeable staff there can and will answer all of your questions with a response that is correct. Many of them are experts and herpetologists (meaning that they are biologists who study reptiles specifically). I haven't been on that site for a while but it is great! I am sad that you will not be paying attention to the advice I took my time to write down for you and that quite frankly your turtle(s) will continue to suffer in a cramped environment. I assure you that my responses to you are not meant to be offensive but rather the blunt truth and I am not saying anything that I don't know is true for a FACT. As I stated above, I never said that YOU took poor care of your turtles but that they were most likely taken care of poorly in the past by their previous owner or set-up. Please do not get mad at me and rate me negative because I am not trying to be offensive I am trying to help you and your turtle(s). I would like to be your friend and you can contact me on AIM or MSN messenger whenever you would like to ask me any questions you may have regarding your turtle(s). I already have a few people who come to me for help but am sure I can squeeze you in as well :-) AIM: RES039 MSN: juligg039@msn.com Thank you for your response :-) Rated +.

Hi! We don't have a turtle, but my daughter would like to have one! If we lived in a climate where it could live outside all year long, I would get one, but I'm otherwise unprepared to deal with a turtle after it gets larger. I already have bloodparrots and angelfish in a 30 gallon tank, so they will need a bigger tank someday. I'm already committed, so to speak! LOL I might get a fiddler crab, though. Those are fascinating to watch! :-)

Well turtles really are great pets to have. Not all of them get as large as mine does so don't be discouraged just yet ;-) You could buy a mud turtle or musk turtle which could live happily in a 55 gallon tank for it's entire life :-) Yeah fish and aquatic invertebrates sure are fun to watch :-D May I ask where you live?

We're in Nebraska. The past few winters haven't been as cold, but we've had winters when the wind chills were 20 - 50 below. I've heard that if the pond is deep enough, sometimes the fish will survive. There are people who have ponds and they leave their koi out all winter. Some survive and some don't, but I just couldn't do that unless we were in a moderate climate and I knew they would be okay. That's just me! :-)

Wow that is amazing. I sure wish I lived close to a lake or wild areas. Sure I live in South Florida but I am in the city and the Everglades is over 30 minutes away :-\ Thank you for your response :-) Rated +.

I guess it does count. Wow you played with it? Those Snapping Turtles are really dangerous and can snap your finger off once they are large enough. And those things get huge! Something like 32 inches or something. hehe Must've been cool to have it in your pond but it probably ate all your fish XD I would like to have one but they need like 300 gallons when they are full grown, they grow quite fast, and you can't pet them. Ah well! Thank you for your response :-) Rated +.
