Flooding again. Good old unstable weather conditions!

Flooded again - How can this possibly be June weather?!

I know there is some debate about global warming, but here we are once again with sand bags to the ready, rubber boots on, and gathering old rags for the potential mess. When it floods, it comes in first through our front door, then our garden gate, and eventually it starts seeping in through the back door. We never really panic anymore as we have no more carpet downstairs, and anything that can be seriously damaged is out of the 'flood plain'. It is such a pain in the bum though! We probably flash flood 3-4 times every winter. Our home has been in our family for over 100 years. Before this past decade it had only flooded once, and that was thirty years ago. Do you also have to deal with problems caused by your local climate? We live near the sea, a pond, and a small river, so when the weather conditions are wrong there is little we can do. How about you? What climate/weather related problems do you have to deal with?

oh that's disturbing woodpigeon. you are really bravehearts to take it in your stride. i haven't been a victim as yet. i live in plains with the sea and hills quite far off. however, once there had been a terrible flood and our ground floor was all full of water. all our wood furniture and gadgets were damaged. couple of days we couldnot go out, everything was virtually called off. recent our country was hit by tsunamis and it was terrible seeing ppl dying and groping for survival! i am quite scared of natural disasters like landslides, floods, tornadoes...God bless all. PS: you all take a very good care of yourself.

You be safe, too. The weather is getting wild, and witht hese things becoming more and more frequent, i think mor and more people are going to be effected in ways they never have been before.

Thnk you. We had the Ryder Cup (golf) last autumn and it was some of the worst weather. There were hurricane and gale warnings. They classify our climate as mild, but with the gulf stream, and being a small island, we get very battered from time to time!

Well luckily I have never had to deal with flooding! Our house is about 7 steps up from street level , then you go round the back and you have another 5 steps up to the rest of the garden so if we flooded from the back it would all drain to street level and if it flooded at the front it would have to be deep to reach our house! I think the worst weather condition is the wind, there is about 14 feet between our house and our neighbours and despite some very tall trees this space seems to turn in to a wind tunnel when the wind blows in a certain direction - luckily for us the worst damage so far has been overturned recycling boxes! I hope that you do not get flooded again sweets - doen't sound like much fun! xxx

I thnk the problem is over the decades the road level has risen with repais and upgrades but he house is on its original foundation. We have a big sewer pull as you walk in our garden gate, and if we get that pulled it usually saves us (although it has clogged too, and at worst will reach a point where it can't take any more). If the tides are up, especially in the spring, the surface water has nowhere to go, and we just watch it spill right back out of the street gutter hole. We were ok last night. It looks like it is going to be drier today, I hope!

oh Honey - it sounds as though you are always a bit on edge when it gets wet and the tide is high (don't mean to sound like Boney M here) and that must be difficult for you! I am so pleased that you were safe last night and I really do hope it dries up for you - are you used to being on alert for flooding in June or is this a new thing? xxx

I am most on alert in the spring with the tides, and in the autumn with the leaves. And in the winter with all that rain. Lol, why should summer be any different, although August is usually the time we get water in all doors. I think we are going to be ok, the main puddle in the fron of the house is gone. It is just the nature of living where we do. Honestly, as crazy as it sounds I love the sea and it is worth it :-)

Hi woodpigeon. I guess you and your family are used to the flood already. I can understand how frustrating it must be to keep everything ready and handy at all times. I lived in an urban city and the only major concern I have is the puddles formed whenever there is a heavy downpour. Otherwise, I'm perfectly safe within my house. I remember a friend whose house was always flooded with water too. It has been the most natural thing for them now to shovel the water out of their house.

It is a bit crazy to get used to something like this but other than moving we don't have alot of choice. It looks like for now that the worst is over.

I live in florida and I hate the weather which is one reason why I can't wait to get out. In the summer ,not only do we have to worry about the tropicla thunderstorms but we have hurricanes to worry about and in the spring,we have severe drought and brushfires. It's like we go from extreme to the next!

Your state is one that is often featured on the news here. It gets really wild there in hurrcane season, doesn't it? We have a 'hurricane season' here, too, but it is nothing like yours. Between that and the Love Bugs, iy yi yi!

A lot of people around here have flooding problems. We've been lucky so far. When we built our house, we built it on the highest part of the property, just in case. My husband's aunt lives one road away from us, and she's had her downstairs destroyed by flooding. Our big problem is with the wind. We've had shingles and trim blown off of our house, and we have to watch for tornadoes. This is the season for them and every time the wind picks up, we're watching for storm warnings.

Tornados can wipe out your whole house. Once when the kids were small I spotted a small twister heading right for our house. I grabbed all the kids and ran down to the basement. I could hear a lot of wind and things getting blown around. It was over quick. We didn't get any real damage, but our camping trailer in the back yard was knocked off it's anchor. A couple of years after that, a town only miles from here had many houses destroyed by a tornado. The national guard had to be called out, it was so bad.

Our house has the old style slates and we loose those too if it gets gale force. Very dangerous to be outside with all that going on. At least we don't have tornados like you do, though. They rip roofs clean off, don't they? I would be watching for storm warnings too!

I honestly think I might have a heart attack. We just don't get anything like that here, although I have seen the nature shows so have an idea of what you mean. That would be absoloutly terrifying!

Do you think, having been through the flood, people are now more incined t get supplies in? We were totally unprepared the first time, but it has gotten easier with experience.

The other weekend we had more rain in two days than we had in two months. It was torrential and unremitting, the road outside was a river, the drains overflowed and the area at the bottom of the hill that was once a turning circle became a lake. The winds began to rise and trees were syawing dangerously over the roads and the rain went from vertical to horizontal in a matter of moments. We have just had a couple of days of gloriously warm and sunny weather and people are all displaying varying hues of sunburn, and today it is cloudy and overcast again. You cannot win with our weather now, I am expecting blizzards in mid June :-)

We flip flop around like that too, and just as dramatically. You be safe, too, it sounds like you get some wild weather as well!

When we bought our house we made sure that we weren't located by an large bodies of water so fortunatly we are most likely safe from flooding. We do however get a small pond in our back yard every time we get a down pour. This was our first year in our house so I am not totally sure of all the down falls yet. This past winter we had to dig our driveway out just so that we could be able to go to town. I hope to never repeat that experience again. How long does this type of weather last for you?

I hope yuo don't have to do that again either. It is such a drag, but maybe you will be able to put in additional drainage if it continues? We had a sump pump at another house and it saved our bacon a couple of times. We have a couple of factors. Spring time we have huge high tides, which, along with a dose of heavy rain, really heavy, even if it only last 5-10 minutes at the height of a tide guarantees it at least in the front door and down the garden gate. It can happen once or twice or 5 times. It's all a matter of luck. Then a sudden heavy summer rain, which for some reason seems to las longer than the spring down poors can do the same. We can flash flood whille we are out and have to hustle it back home and get the sewer pulled and get out there with the broom and make sure all the drains are prisitne and flowing. In the winter, cripes, it can happen over and over. And in the autumn we have to make sure all the leaves are out of the surface gutters, becasue if they even slow down the water it goes into our house first. Pretty much year round, but it is more of a nuisance than anything. As long as we are home and awake we can deal with it as a matter of course. Everyone has their little jobs to do.
