Do you remember people thinking shopping carts were germ laden?

Well, it is really true. It's been coughed on, sneezed on, handled by people who don't wash their hands or who have handled raw meat. They have found urine, fecal matter, saliva and mucus. E.coli, staphylococcus, salmonella and influenza can live on grocery carts. GAG! Check out the article at http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/cart.asp

Wow that is disgusting! It is bad enough we touch those shopping cart handles, but some people actually let their babies chew on them! How gross is that? If you really think about how many things you touch that are probably really nasty, like bathroom door handles, doorjams, lightswitches, etc., it would make you want to never leave your home again.

Sorry, but you SNEEZE, cough and goodness knows what before you touch things in your house. Do you run and wash your hands after a "dry" sneeze? I don't know many people that do. Then you touch light switches, tv remotes (this is REALLY bad germ catcher), doors, computers, phones (another bad one).... You are still in a germ fest. Just because they are YOUR germs doesn't make them less harmful...

There was also a special on tv, I think it was 20/20. They talked about shopping carts being big breeders of all kinds of nasty things. Also pens, which I didn't even think of before. It really makes you think twice about wanting to go shopping.

Yuck! Pens, too! Now that one I didn't think of that. Some people even stick the tip of pens in their mouth, but I always thought it was their pen. Double gross!

It's a good idea to think of your hands as germ laden, desease ridden appendages from the time you get out of your to go into the store until you have your groceries safely in your cabinet at home. Don't touch your face or mouth or anyone else with these disgusting germs. Take Lysol disinfecting wipes with you in the car so you can wipe some of that off between the store and the house.

If you think about it the food is not safe, the packaging is not germ free and the carts and boxes etc are not clean either. Neither is the belt you put them on if you think about it. Also the poor cashier doesn't wash her hands between customers items. You get into your car which is not germ free. Especially if you have pets or children. The car comes in contact with things during driving. Then you carry these things into your house and if you use alot of cleaning products then good for you. Time to do all again when you bring those things into your house. Sorry to bring this kind of thing to you however when we stop and think about it. The world is not a clean habitat. Thankfully!

To tell you the truth, I assumed as much. When I gethome from the shop, before I start putting stuff away, I wash my hands. I assume a lot of the packaging itself is probably covered in who knows what, too. Think of how many people handles it between it being sealed and landing in your trolley? NOt everybody is good abouut washing their hands.

The grocery store by my house now has germicidal wipes by the carts. I always forget to use them. Most people's immune system is capable of fighting off the majority of those germs anyway. Also, how long can they live on the surface of the cart anyway?

I just read the article. UGH! I mean, it doesn't surprise me a bit that the carts are so germ covered, but still.....it's just GROSS! Now I want to go out and invest in some of those plastic disposable gloves so I can take them and use them every time I go shopping. LOL

I've had people put infants on the conveyor belt at the supermarket checkout! Too bad others put their food on there. I've also seen a woman change her baby on the table in a coffee shop. Should I mention those people who dump used diapers anywhere they like? I thought we were supposed to be civilised.

Yes it's true..our grocery store provides sanitary sterile wipes for you to wipe down the handles and the areas you may be touching...it doesn't handle it all but helps a little!!!! It is truly gross and disgusting!!!

I never stopped to think about it until I saw a commerical for a hand sanitizer on TV. The commerical brought up the same subject. I will never look at a shopping cart the same way again! It is really gross when you stop to think that just about everything that you touch is the same way. It drives me crazy when I see people leaving the bathroom without washing their hands. When available, I use the paper towel that I dried my hands with to open the bathroom door. When that is not available, I try to use the part of the door handle that people don't touch. Talk about gross! :-0

I'm happy to see that more stores around here have those disinfectant wipes for the carts. It's still unpleasant to think of all the pathogens that are probably living on the carts.

i think it's not only carts that are germ laden but almost all the things that are passed onto our hands. same goes with the coins and paper bills that are transferred from source to another, the door knobs of public toilets, handrails of moving escalators and other conveyor transport like buses, handrails of stairways, and a lot more. to avoid further contaminations, health experts say, we should wash our hands with germicidal soap always before and after using anything, most specially during meals.

Yuck! But I believe it, and now am convinced now more than ever, that sometimes when abby got sick it was because of the shopping cart. I had to take her. She had sensory issues...so things went into her mouth. including the shopping cart handle...yuck! poor thing. I'm glad they have those wipes now!

Yup. That is why one should never put their hands around their nose, mouth, eyes or face after handling a public doorknob, grocery cart etc! I am trying so hard to get my hubby to quit touching his nose! He had bad allergies for years and it is just a habit for him to put his hand up around his nose! The mucous membranes of the nose and in the mouth are so suseptible to the bacteria on our hands! That is the number one way we get sick!

My goodness, this is interesting. Sort of like an eye opener to me. Although there will be a possibility for the supermarket owners to charge us by using the sanitary wipes. Imagine the number of people who are going to the supermarket everyday. I think I will bring my own sanitary wipes the next time I drop in for my grocery stuff. Thank you for sharing.

"GAG" doesn't even begin to explain it! Let's not forget about how those carts also sit outside exposed to animal droppings and who knows what else. I am so glad they make these cute little seat covers to put on them to protect the babies at least...now I just have to figure out how to keep my two year old from licking them!
