What is the purpose of "Digg This"?

I am seeing more and more blogs and websites with a link to "Digg This". What is this and what is its purpose? Does it help a site rise in rankings? Is it beneficial to add this to your blog? Please help as I am confused as to whether or not I should add this link to my blogs and if it would be beneficial to do so. Thanks in advance!

Digg is an amazing social network site, where you can get a good viwership to site if posted, It has a good community to respond to each reasonable post, I used to post my shareapic gallery there, from where i get a minimum of 25 views to each picture so this is a great opportunity if you can post your blog there.
