I just watched Dream Girls! Why?

Can someone tell me why Jennifer Hudson was not considered the leading role in this movie. The movie was obviously about Effie White. Jennifer Hudson played Effie White so why wasn't she the lead role. It seems to stupid to me after seeing the film that Jennifer was considered the supporting actress when it was her character that was the centre of the entire movie. Does anyone know why it happened that way?
