Have you ever considered the Peace Corps? Have you ever applied?

I am in the process to trying to join the Peace Corps. I am about half way through the process, and won't really find out if I am accepted until the end, but I am really excited.
How many of you have thought about joining the Peace Corps? How many of you have actually applied? And if you didn't apply, then what stopped you? Do you have any friends who served in the Peace Corps?

I never thought about applying until recently. However, I don't think I could fit into my life at the moment. I totally should have done it 2 years ago before I started my masters. Actually, my cousin is the Peace Corps right now. She's in Moldova working with a women's NGO. She seems to like it. She keeps a blog about it actually.

I understand that many people have commitments that keep them from it, whether it is school, or relationships, or debt.
That's great to hear about your cousin working in Moldova. I know some people from there as well as Romania, through an organization that I volunteered for.
I was interested in going to Eastern Europe, but the program I was most interested in was in the Pacific, and that was what I was nominated for. I would be excited no matter where they send me.
If your cousin's blog is public, could you post it. I would like to see what her experience is like.

Why not do the Peace Corps a favor and post a url or address for people interested in possibly joining?

I had a friend about 15 years ago who went into the Peace Corps. We were working together in Washington, DC, and she decided she wanted to do something different. She was assigned to Micronesia (South Pacific) and really liked it. She worked in a think tank in Fiji or Tahitit after her Peace Corps experience; then we lost touch. I think it's a great experience for anyone and wish I had done it when I was younger. Good luck to you. One thing is true: the Peace Corps folks are a family for life. I've met a few over the years, and they still talk about their experiences, meet at conferences many years later, etc. I think it's a great choice for anyone. Good luck.

Thank you. I really am looking forward to it, and hope that things work out. I am waiting on my medical kit now, and then will have to get doctors appointments.
My brother was in Americorps for one of their programs, NCCC, and I think it was a great thing. But I had only heard about peace corps experiences through friends of friends, and what I have read, until I asked my interviewer about his experience.
