Do babies have bad dreams or nightmares?

My 5 month old daughter wakes up in the middle of the night crying as if she got hurt or startled. At those times, she finds it hard to sleep and cries when she can't see me from her crib. Although it doesn't happen regularly, I'm curious to know if other moms experience this with their babies too at such an early age.

Thanks for the tip and for the nice comment. That's my 5 month old and she got scared when she heard her dad's mobile phone vibrate on top of the table, buzzing noises annoy her at times. :)

Oh ya i totally belive this! My husband however does not. He syas what do babies have abd dreams about, nothing bad has ever happened to it. I think babies have bad dreams about mommy not being there or that scary noise they heard recently or about a bath or whatever. just because these things are nothing to us, they are very meaningful to babies!

Dont worry,i think babies do dream in their sleep. Even my little one who is 2yrs now used to getup in middle of his sleep and used to cry like your one does but he is ok now and his awakening doesnot repeate now.

My babies were like that too and my mother would even comment that she quarrelled with her angels. He he he! But I guess that is just normal and that I believe that babies may have bad dreams too, if not they may be experiencing some physical discomfort.

When my grown children were little...I remember asking my Grandmother this very question...she said that she always believed that when they are that young...it may be memories of being birth....or something like that....LOL There also appears to be alittle fear of seperation anxiety..which is completely normal, in my opinion...

My niece has a few times talked about having bad dreams. She is 4 years old. I'm not sure what causes them but I feel so bad to hear about it.

i have 4 kids and based on experiences i think babies do dream too.... but dont have the capacity to tell us what was it. sometimes if you will observe them they will be giggling or laughing so i predict it was a nice dream.

sometimes when they are sleeping their bodies are still moving like their hands and legs they hit themselves and it wakes them up my little girl did this abit when she started moving more this could be whats waking your baby up. Also they can get that sinking feeling when they sleep to.
