I was raised in Iowa...we raised alot of corn...LOL
We always used scarecrows...my Grandpa swore by them...I consequently always use one when I have a garden....
I do not know of any other way to keep the crows away...
I think the crows believe that a person is watching the crop and might get them if they bother the crop....but having never been a crow...I can only guess...LMAO

We always took an old pair of Grandpa's overalls and stuffed them with straw that can be purchased from any local feed store...then remember to make a head out of an old pillowcase..(we used to use gunney sacks)....and be sure to put a hat on it...draw on a face....then take 2 boards and make a T...attach the scarecrow to this board with wire or rope...try not to make the binding real obvious.....then tie the arms ....stand a rake or hoe leaning against him....
They do work...I have seen it all my life....and it is a good family project making one...use your imagination...try to make it look like a real person..the hair can be yarn or an old wig....
Have fun...
