Niamh is not up to mischief now!

I have just returned from hospital where I have been with the family after I had to call emergency doctor as my normally boisterous 5 year old daughter Niamh had been ill since 3 am the morning before! I was told repeatedly that it was just a bug and not to worry but when you realise that a child is vomitting up more than they are getting down you know you have to be careful! All the medical staff we seen couold not have been more pleasant, helpful or caring - a really good bunch of doctors and nurses and I take my hat off to them! At first I was told she would have to be admitted to the ward but once she was rehydrated and starting to tolerate fluid, 5ml every 5mins(this cycle has to start again when she awakes!) and they had the test results we were given the choice of whether to take her home with open access to the childrens ward if her condition deteriorates in any way or even if I just need reassurance, or to keep her in the ward! Since I am still recuperating from back surgery and could not have slept on a mattress on the floor of her room AND because we only live 2 minutes from the hospital we decided to bring her home! The thing that has me really concerned is that at first they thought she had viral gastritis but after test it is looking like she has either a uti or a kidney infection! She had to have an isotopic kidney scan last year which although the result was ok , did show that one kidney did not work so well as the other, now they are saying she may need to start on other scans but will know more in a few days!
I know that there are many people out there far worse off than my daughter or I but it seems like she has overcome so many physical problems already in her short life and I hate to see her suffer! I do not mean to moan or complain - I guess I just needed to let some of this out! I really meant to just come on and explain that while I will do my best to keep up with my friends discussions and any responses I have to any of my discussions obviously my daughter comes first and I will only be able to come on when she is beside me and when she is well enough for me to concentrate on anything else for a minute or two! So my friends I am not ignoring you and I will be here when she sleeps! Sorry again for offloading xxxxx

I´m sorry to hear this, dear. Poor little mite. I hope the days you´re going to have to wait to see if she needs scanning again won´t be endless.
I think you´ve made a wise choice. If the hospital is so near to where you live it´s better to keep her at home with her family.
Please don´t worry about responding and keeping up with our discussions. I´m sure everyone here understands why this is not one of your priorities now. But it was nice of you to let us all know why you won´t be around here too much. I know how you must feel, it´s so painful to see your child suffer. I hope you´ve got somebody who can give you a hand because you´re not that well yourself.
Hopefully your little girl gets better very soon. I´ll keep my fingers crossed.
Hugs and lots of love to both of you
XXX Dana

Poor little thing. Isn't she awfully young to have a UTI? Hope she gets better soon. Sick kids and animal just break my heart as they look so helpless.

She is doing a bit better now honey, She has been having UTI's since she was a baby - we have to ensure we use no perfumed creams, bubble bath, only wears loose cotton on her bottom half etc but none of it seems to help - the last time it happened badly she was 4 and bleeding like she was menstruating - that is really scary! xxxx

Please my dear dear friend don't think it's offloading, confiding is a much better word, after all what are friends for if we can't give each other some sound advice, hugs and knowing that we are there for, besides when I have needed help, comfort and soothing you have been straight there, have you not? Besides this site is therapy, if you can't get your feelings, your rants, your voice heard then you will only bottle it up and that is not good for you or me, so we use Mylot and our special friends for the support that we need. It's good to rant and it's good to express our feelings in this way and you know whatever happens I'll be here for you, but I guess you know that already xxx

This problem you are having with your daughter rings a bell with me. When I was a kid I was always having medical issues. I had two hernia surgeries by the time I was 8 yrs old. At one point doctors thought I might have kidney stones because my stomach pains were so bad. Turns out I had a severe UTI. It wasn't until I became an adult that utrasounds revealed that I only have one fully functioning kidney which is enlarged to do the work of the other kidney as well. The other kidney is shriveled due to inactivity. Even now, at 25 yrs old, I still get UTI's and Yeast infections on a regular basis. When I was pregnant I had a UTI, kidney infection, pneumonia, and premature labor all at the same time! Anyway, my heart goes out to your daughter and to you. It's never easy to watch your child go through something you can't do much about. I'm sure she finds comfort in your presence though. Be strong, she will come through this in time and so will you. Come back to us here at mylot as soon as you can.

Zuri I thank you for being a friend and for sharing your experience with me! people find it hard to believe that she has been having uti's since she was a baby, in fact when she was 4 she bled for 2 days - THAT was horrific! I am so sorry that you went through so much pain and have to suffer as a result of this problem! You have given me strength to make sure that we monitor this closely and it really is too serious to take a chance with this condition! I will be here when she is resting and I hope to come back even more soon cos that will mean she is much better! xxx

Oh Sweets,Don't you hate when you child is ill.I always wished it was me instead when one of the kids would be sick.It is the most difficult thing to sit by and watch a small body hurt. That is the mommy in us that kicks in bigtime when our kids need us.
I hope my little granddaughter will be up and appling her make up again soon..hehe.
My love to you all.Get your rest and don't let all this set you back.
You should be resting when Niamh is! We don't want you getting too tired out.
Love and Hugs

I am really sorry to know this about your daughter. Now I know why I was not seeing you here for a while. I know the worries of a mother when a small child of her age gets sick like this way. I hope she will be well very soon and ask you to take care of her until she is totally fit.

So sorry to hear your little one is ill. Do remember that there's a lot of prayers going out for you. I hope everything goes well with the tests, and will keep an eye open for news from you. And never feel sorry for offloading, a lot of parents here on MyLot knows how it feels. It's sometimes good to let it out, and support here is plenty.
Prayers to you - Ronelle

I really hope that she starts to feel better real soon. There is nothing worse than seeing a sick child. We understand what a horrible feeling this is and we have all been on trips to the ER , Im glad that you got a great bunch of staff, It makes things a whole heap easier. Im thinking of Niamh hopefully she will be back to herself in no time.

Thank you Calais - you're a great mate! She was actually in the Childrens ward and in bed - I was used to this with her older brother but despite the problems Niamh has had she has never spent a night in hospital before! She really frightened me today but she is a little better now and hopefully the medicine will kick in!

I'm so sorry to hear about Niamh, mummymo. I'm enjoying just starting to get to know you as a 'friend' on here. I can empathize with you as well, as my daughter was quite ill when she was 8, and went through a number of tests etc. I was soooooooooo relieved to have her well again, and thankful that everything turned out okay. Please don't worry about not responding etc. here on myLot, as your daughter is 'your daughter,' and she's your top priority right now. There's 'nothing worse' than seeing our kids not well, and having that totally helpless feeling. I'll pray for both of you, and trust that we'll hear a good report in the near future.xx

Poor Niamh! I hope she is feeling much, much better and all of yu (YOU TOO!) are getting plenty of rest. That is really handy that the hopital is so close, it sounds like the best possible scenario. I can't believe you are even worrying about getting behind, you silly mummygoose. Look after your little one and don't give it another thought!

Thank you so much woodpigeon - I read through these responses earlier and they really did make me feel so much better! No I haven't rested yet but I am going to soon - slept about 4 hrs out of the last 48 so I think my body is refusing to sleep as a kind of silent protest! lol Had to phone the childrens ward today and they were fantastic they gave me some advice and said I could bring her straight in but I decided to let her sleep a bit longer and she turned the corner a little - even managed to tolerate a little food and keep it down! Thank you for being such a good friend - AGAIN!
