What would you do if you found a wild baby animal that needed help?

Would you help it the best you could? Would you simply leave it wherever you found it? Or would you do something else? Yesterday, while my kids and I were outside in our yard my 6 year old son saw something on the ground and asked me what it was. At first I didn't know, until I saw a beak and feathers, then I knew it was a baby bird! It happened to fall out of it's nest. Darn little bird was very active. LOL I called me husband while he was at work and let him know about it as I was thinking my husband just might be able to reach the nest to put the baby bird back. So while my kids and I waited for their father to come home, my youngest son and I looked for bugs to feed the bird. I was able to feed the little bird some bugs (sorry little ladybugs!), about 10 in one sitting (it took about 45 minutes in all). I did feel the craw to make sure I wasn't overfeeding him. About 2 hours later I fed him about 7 more ladybugs. I also gave the baby bird little bits of water in between feeding him. Shortly after my husband arrived home. We went outside so I could show him where the nest was. He grabbed a ladder and up he went to see it he could find the nest (the nest is hidden in a palm tree). Once he found it he got the baby bird and put him back up it it's nest. I checked last night and today to see if the baby bird fell out again, but I guess it's still in the tree as I could not find it (or his little siblings) on the ground.
By the way, we have a lot of trees in our yard. And because of this we have a ton of wild birds (blue jays, robins, little black birds, sparrows, hummingbirds, and so forth) that visit or make homes in these trees. Every spring at least one little baby bird falls out of it's nest. Sometimes it doesn't make the fall and other times we weren't able to put it back in the nest as it was too high. The ones that made it we would take in and tend to them best we could. Though sadly those that we took in died. :( So it makes me feel good that my husband and I were able to help this little bird out. :)

I would have probably done the same thing and try and find food for the bird or other animals. My parents had an injured squirrel under one of their bushes. Apparently it broke its back from falling off a wire and could not move the bottom part of himself. My parents tried giving it food and water. I do not think it is legal for us to handle wild animals. It is not there anymore as they think a cat or other animal might have gotten the poor squirrel. Behind my shed is all woods and am still trying to attract birds to my birdbath and feeder.

I would definately help it thats what i do here in Australia i care for sick ,injured or orphaned native wildlife .At the moment i have two orphaned joey kangaroos here and at times have had up to ten ,i enjoy what i do i care for them then release them back into the wild to be free just like nature intended for them to be .If you find an injured animal take them to your vet they will give them to an animal group who will care for them and then relesae them .
It`s important to remember that all animals have a special type of diet and this needs to be maintained for the animal to be able to grow to it`s full potential .

I think you did the right thing. If I were in a situation where a baby animal needed help, I'd be sure it got the help it needed. If the baby animal were big enough or scared enough to be dangerous, I'd call a wildlife agency or animal control. If it was safe to help it myself, I'd put in my car and drive it to the vet. I'm just glad you found the bird and not me. I don't think I would have been able to get it back in the tree.

Congratulations to your son for showing compassion. Last week my son found a baby bird also. He ran inside to get me so that I would be able to save thee baby bird from our German Shepard. I was able to put the baby bird back into the nest but for some reason the mother kicked it out again. I continued to feed the baby bird but it didn't make it. We have had this happen to several baby birds this year. We have also found some baby bunnies in our yard as well. We left them alone for a day or two to see if the mother would come back but I believe she got hit by a car. We have been taking care of them as well.
