Do you read the labels on cans and the back of packages to check for nutritional values or do you just pick up a package because it's on the list. I check for saturated fats and sodium. what do you check for?

Before i do read all the ingredients and the nutrition listed in cans or pack of food but now not that often. What i read everytime i buy food is the EXPIRATION DATE. Even if the promo girl says its NEW i would still look for the EXPIRATION DATE. Why? Because i had an experience buying a product which i didnt know was already expired (it was a mayonaise), good thing i wasnt able to eat it nor taste rather when i spread on the bread the smoothness was different and part of it has a different color and of course when i smelled it, it has a different smell too but not that bad. I didnt want to try it just to find out. I looked at the bottle and saw that it was indeed expired. Good thing i still have the receipt so i went back to the store and complained it. They apologized and exchanged it with a new one. But i really emphasize to them that SELLING EXPIRED PRODUCTS is extremely against the law and they could kill someone for food poisoning too. The management expressed their sincere apologies and told me that they would make sure that all their products will be audited and checked making sure all there are no expired products in the selling area.

I had that happen too with applesauce in the little individual packages. It was expired. And you could tell it right away. Glad you were able to so you didn't get sick!

I am afraid I don't really check for the nutritional values of the things I buy. I just check for the price, LOL! But I saw on Oprah that we really should be carefull about the ingredients that are being added to our canned goods and prepacked food because they are full of preservatives that is bad for the health. Good for you to check the labels of the packages you are buying. I guess I should start on that too.

I check for carbs, fat and fiber. I am a real stickler on high fiber foods. The other 1/2 is a diabetic, so carbs are important. Lately, I have been checking for country of origin too.

Why country of origin? I never thought of that.

With all of the bad things that are coming out of China these days, I would rather not buy anything from there. I also check the expiration date...just checking through meat packaging, I have seen 2 days difference, more on things like milk and yogurt. Fresher is better

if it is the first time i am buying the product, i tend to read everything on it. i make sure to know when is the expiration dates, etc. but i seldom check on the nutritional values etc. unless i read or heard something about the product. there are times when i am in a hurry that i just put anythign that i can see in my shopping cart.

I think for time to time we all get in a hurry. At least you check the expiration date! Thanks for the response!

Yeah, I make it a point to read the LABELS specially the SUGAR, FAT, AND SODIUM content. Also I have researched a lot about Monosodium Glutamate and I noticed a lot of packaged foods does not SAY IN THE LABEL that there's MSG but NOWADAYS they CAMOUFLAGED the labels with other words to replace MSG (like seasonings, flavors). MSG is hidden EVERYWHERE even in candies that our kids eat! (www.truthinlabeling.org) I was shocked with what I found out in this website. So parents, beware!

Good advice. Many are allergic to MSG....and it can be lethal!
