I just found out my friend has toe nail fungus. I can't believe I didn't know that before. It is summer time and she is of course wearing flip flops. I new she had funny looking toe nails but this is the first time I asked about them. Well it is toe nail fungus. She has tried soaking them on a regular basis in vinegar but it has not worked so far. Some one told her to eat lots of yogurt but that has not helped either. Does anyone out there have a home remedy cure that actually works?

I have a relative with toe nail fungus issues and she's tried a lot fo home remedies. There are two she says that has worked for her.
1. Vicks Vapor Rub
Basically you clean your nails and put the vicks vapor rub on at night, then put socks on and go to sleep. I've been told that this does work but it causes the nails to darken and you have to wait until they fully grow out for the nail fungus to be gone. It is a cheap, easy solution but it can take a month or so for the fungus to be gone.
2. Urine
This is the grosser of the two. There is an agent in human urine that kills fungus. Basically you soak your toes in it for 15 mintues twice a day and the fungus will eventually die.
Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if those methods were work or not. The reasons vicks works is because of the menthol in it that kills fungus.
The reason urine works is the amonia I think. I'm not a chemist, but urine is also a known cure for athlete's foot, because again it kills fungus.

oh my. Those are interesting! I definitely agree with the wearing of socks (clean white cotton) and think the vicks method is worth a try! the use of urine is supposed to cure acne too - but again I would not be willing to submit it to the test!

I wonder if the vinegar (an anti fungal) has to get under the toe nail bed and not just on top to work? Did she use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar? All the healing things I hear of involving vinegar will generally specify using apple cider variety.
I think toe nail fungus is contagious - I worked at a skilled nursing facility and had to assist the podiatrist once with his rounds and within a short time after that I had a toe nail fungus.
my husband used to love those digger the hermaphodite (I am thinking that is what it was called) commercials.
I really believe in the curing properties of Tree Tea Oil, you can get an extractive at the healthfood store for a few bucks. I think it should not be put on full strength though, and may need to be mixed in with a little mineral or olive oil, she can put a dab of solution on a cotton ball and apply to each affected toenail (Use a clean area or new cotton ball for each toe ) and then put socks on.
whatever remedy she tries, do tell her to wear clean cotton socks to help wick away any moisture, fungus thrives in dampness.
oh yeah, there is always listerine isn't that supposed to be an antiseptic that will kill even morning breath germs? lol.

ROFL its, "Digger the Dermatophyte." Cute joke. ;)
Toe nail fungus, like any other fungus is contageous. That's why athlete's foot spreads around so prolifically in places where large amounts of people shower regularly.
I'm still laughing at the hermaphrodite comments...

oops I forgot to mention - while yoghurt replenishes the good bacterias and is often used for infection control - it should be plain or at least un sweetened yogurt - because the bad bacterias thrive in sugary environments.
I am thinking I have read before that the element in yogurt that actually is effective is the acidiphilus cultures. you can buy acidiphilus supplements I think in powder or tablet form.

I asked my mum and my nanna used tea tree oil and vinegar and it worked you have to soak you toe for an hour two times a day. It sounds like a lot but my mum swears by this. Its straight vinegar and five drops of tea tree oil no water it can sting she said but dont dialute at all so its a fair bit of vinegar I guess unless you have a small foot or small bowl. bood luck I hope this helped.
