What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be all sorts of things when I was growing up, a veternarian, an author, a model. I ended up being an insurance agent! LOL I love my job though and it affords me the luxury of doing what I ended up being most passionate about, spending time with my family. I have a flexible schedule and decent pay, although I'm not even close to knocking down the big salary I dreant about as a child. What about you? What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a Nun so badly! Everyone on our block (this was back in the fifties if any of you oldsters remember those days) and all the families were Catholic but us! We were Baptists! But the Catholic kids got out of school more often than we did for different Saints' days, etc. And they would have all kinds of celebrations, etc. And I just thought those habits the Nuns wore were the cat's meow! LOL

At least the reasoning for wanting to be a nun wasn't "I saw Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg..." LOL! I vent about a lot of stuff on here too, it's a great forum.

Isn't that hilarious? But I did! I wanted to be a Nun in the worst way! I couldn't understand why all the Catholic kids in the 'hood hated the Nuns! I didn't realize what strict disciplinaries they were! LOL! Thanks for welcoming me to Mylot. I get a lot of frustrations out here!

I wanted to be a doctor so badly but my mom told me that my brother had to be the doctor because he's a guy. THAT really hurt. I wanted to be in the medical field so I said how about nursing? Nope, the course was too expensive. So Mom said--how about becoming a teacher instead? I had absolutely no patience and while I did graduate, I decided not to continue teaching. I wrote for the school paper in high school and in university as well. I enjoyed writing so I got a job as reporter and op/ed writer for a daily, then became a feature writer for a monthly magazine, then went back to grad school and ended up editing scholarly publications and monographs. That led to textbook editing--my teacher training paid off!-- (for close to fourteen years) and then I had a slip-and-fall and was immobile for a year. Then I got into business for myself (20 years ago) and also got licensed as a Realtor (15 years ago) and I still sell houses (which I love, by the way). And I also wanted to be a nun (just like your other poster). I actually tried it out for two weeks (the works!) with kitchen duty, mopping floors, scouring bathrooms, and waking up at 4 am for Matins and daily Mass at seven a.m. I didn't mind cleaning toilets, but waking up early wasn't for me. I STILL want to be a doctor (if you notice my posts I hand out advice left, right, and centre--practicing medicine without a license, LOL!!!)--maybe next lifetime! :-0

IT sounds like you are pretty well rounded sea! I thought of being a realtor once, but I didn't think I was suited for it. I did plan on nursing school, but everytime I got it together I'd end up pregnant and have to put school off. As far as being a nun, never in my wildest dreams would I go that route.

I wanted to become a doctor while I was growing up. But because of financial constraints, I ended up taking another degree. Not that I am not happy with my present job. I do love what I am doing right now. The career is promising as I do public relations job. It's just that the thought of being a doctor is still sitting at the back of my mind...

First of all im just 23 years of age....and i have not fixed my address in any profession.I badly wanted to be a detective during my childhood days when i was a diehard fan of "hardyboys&nancydrew"...then i outgrew it and began reading newspapers regularly especially the sports page...now i wanted to become a professional sportsman...i wanted to be good in atleast one sports..i didn't care which, though i secretly nursed hopes of becoming a footballer...But that dream went to the dust and sadly even today i can't claim a game im really good at!!!..Afterwards i began moving onto the business section of the newspaper and you can guess what i wanted to be ...An entrepenuer with a rags to riches story...but by now i had finished my schooling and had to take a decision...and my parents and friends convinced me that it was foolhardy to jump into business...To end the story,Im now a medical student...an envy in the eyes of many, but not actually thrilling to me, because i find it a safe and secure way of life, not adventurous enough....THANK YOU FOR READING THE FULL RESPONSE

A med student, you're parents must be very proud! I never thought of being a doctor as safe and secure, I guess most people think it's a glamorous job. Congratulations to you, I'm sure you will make a difference in many lives.

I was just too embarassed to walk around a college campus pregnant. So now I am a stay-at-home mom and it is the best thing ever!!!

when I was quite young I remember I was so sure I needed to grow up and be an actress and dancer. Then one day around 10 I was introduced into a public health nurse and WOW I wanted to be a public health nurse. Soon afterward I thought I was not smart enough to be a public health nurse so I would have to find something new. A the while I had a deep desire to sing but it was a secret. When I was 13 or 14 I remember telling some cousins of mine that I was absolutely positive I was going to grow up and be a writer. I have held that in my heart to this day. I did try singing for a while too. But I decided to let the singers sing and I would be their audience. So far I have never done anything that I wanted to do. In my late teens early twenties I worked in a bank then worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for awhile until I went to school in my late twenties to train for pre=school teacher. I still want to be a writer someday. If I could write a book that it love by many doesn't have to be in the millions or anything but would be nice. If I could write a book that people would love I would have that inner sense of satisfaction that I followed at least one of my dreams to the end.

When I was growing up I always wanted to be a singer, up until now I still do. But of course career path changes. Depends on how you want to earn and be successful. Although I still am planning on pursuing being a musician someday, I am thankful that I have a job that can help me with my expenses at the same time help my family.

I wanted to be an airline stewardess and I was for BEA for 2 years until I went to live in North Africa. Since then I have been a German to English technical translator for the US Army, various secretarial jobs and ended up as a Medical Fraud Investigator. What a strange mixture !! LOL

When I was a kid- I wanted to be alot of things- A mom (that is the only thing I accomplished out of all my wishes). A professional basketball player- a rock star- a doctor that didn't deal with blood! lol... I'm an accountant- a bean counter- number cruncher-- I love my job most days! Some days I could take it or leave it-- but I think we are all that way- My favorite job is MOM!

Let's see... I wanted to be a truck driver (now, I hate driving!) a ballerina (no sense of rhythm, so that's out), a firefighter (ladders scare me), and a mom. I think I made the best choice of the four. :)

I always wanted to be a nurse or a school teacher....having a child when I was 16 did seem to put a hault to that dream ....or so I thought, many years later....I was able to fulfill this childhood dream.....becoming a nurse....also after having children...I decided that I did not want to deal with the "attitude" of the students......I spent 10 years performing this profession..... The first childhood job I wanted was to be a mother...I got that one way earlier than I anticipated....but all of these things made me who I am...so I can not complain...LOL

I have always wanted to work for a fan club of country music artist doing design on their website and the whole package of stuff they do. I love working on the internet, and I would love to mail out fan club packets and merchandise. I know it would make people happy. I am so into music. The other thing I would have loved to do, was be a florist. I love flowers and I would love delivering them to people and making them happy receiving them.

I wanted to be a pilot. Then when I had to wear glasses, there went my dream. I wanted to be a vet, but when I did not perform that well in Science, there went another one. I wanted to be a cop...but as I grew up I had a distaste for cops, much like how the dog has this thing against mailmen, and now I am a...lol...should I say it?
