Anyone know any cures for stomach issues?

My dog tends to either get diarrhea or vomits after eating the basic dry food I have been feeding her (Iams). I have tried giving her some yogurt with the food, which seems to help a little with the vomiting, but increases the diarrhea. She is a mix of Shepherd, Collie, & Chow (and may have some Sheltie in her). Please let me know if you've done anything to help your dogs diet?

My old vet had me give one of my dogs an antacid, he kept throwing up the yellow stomach acid gunk. My mom's vet said for her to give her dogs a tablespoon of yogurt everyday for diarrhea. The bacteria in the yogurt is good for dogs as well. Are you giving too much yogurt maybe? Or try a different brand, that Activa by Dannon is supposed to be good. Our doctor recommended that for us when we were sick last month. I have heard that Iams and Science Diet, and those other expensive brands aren't really all that great for dogs, like most of the dog foods out there now lol....may help to slowly switch her to another brand. If you haven't checked with your vet yet, may be worth it to try that as well, though I know that can be expensive by the time you walk in the door :) Hope you figure something out and good luck!!

Well we did change the brand of yogurt and I've been giving her 1/3 cup of it daily...so maybe I'll switch to a tablespoon. I might also try Eukaneuba (sp?). I have noticed that when she has the yogurt she doesn't eat grass outside...so it's got to be helping in some way. I may try the antacid as well...was it any particular kind? Thanks Signal20

My dog was throwing up his stomach acid and that's why the vet said to try the antacid. I just used a generic brand of rantidine. Check with your vet first though since you're going in anyway :) That's good that the diarrhea stopped. Maybe it was too much yogurt? Hope your doggie feels better!!

If the diarrhea persists after a couple of days, you need to take your dog to the vet. Dogs can dehydrate very quickly and there might be a problem more serious than just the food.

If your dog is still having diarrhea, there's a possibility that she is dehydrated and this is cause for concern with dogs as well as humans. My dogs had the parvo virus when they were just a few months old and parvo causes them to have diarrhea and also vomitting. I'm not saying that your dog might have parvo because it only affects dogs at a very young age like up to a year old. What I would be concerned about is the dehydration part. The vet showed me how to tell if my dog is dehydrated or not. The way to do this is to grab the skin at the back of the neck (not too hard), just pinch it and wait for the skin to go back and stretch down. If your dog is dehydrated, it will take longer for the skin to go back down because normally the skin will stretch back down as soon as you release. If your dog happens to be dehydrated, I would suggest getting a bottle of pedialyte and a big plastic syringe (you won't need the needle). How much pedialyte to give depends on how big your dog is. I have chihuahuas weighing between 10 - 12 lbs and I gave them 30 mL pedialyte 3x a day until they were hydrated. I hope this helps because I know how hard it is to have a sick pet.

Has this been going on for some time? Check the IAMS you have been feeding your dog. It appears that it may be part if the IAMS Pet Food recall that was making pets sick and killing them. See a Vet right away. Vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate a dog or human.
