I don't normally watch the news and now I know why. I just saw a report on how the Veteran Administration is paying out disability payments to Vets due to hemorrhoids and STD's to the tune millions of dollars a year. I know people that are fighting to get on disability who are on oxygen or have major health problems, to me hemorrhoids are not a major health problem and most STD's are not either. Why are they getting disability when others who really do need it aren't? This is also costing them so that they might not have enough money to treat the soldiers and upcoming vets. Is it just me or does someone else see something wrong with this picture? You can read about it here: http://www.wtsp.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=56446

This kind of stuff makes me so mad, especially when I know someone who had to fight for benefits from the military for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I don't look at STD's as a result of being in the military, it's a result of a person being irresponsible. They did it to themselves and I don't think something like that should be given the same weight as other things.

I agree for the most part on the STD's. The only exception to that is if they got it while working in the medical field and it was prior to universal precautions going into effect or from a blood transfusion etc. Things beyond their control. However if they got it just because they didn't want to wrap it up that is their own fault.

I never listen to the news anymore. I just dont trust them. As far as disability goes. It is not right. I mean, I know people who are just lazy and wont work and have never worked is drawing disability. While people who are disabled and cannot work, they try but just cant do it... these people cant get disability. It is sad and I get really upset at the system. I know a family who had a son who is the meanest rudest child I have ever seen in my life. He cant seem to get along with other kids so he gets disablity and they pay his parents back pay also. They bought his older sister a car and the family a swimming pool with his back pay..... I cant afford a pool and my husband works hard. It is not right and it probably never will be.

Believe me I know. I know many who deserve to be on disability but either are fighting for it or are still trying to find work while others I know who don't deserve it get it. Hearing that tonight just really ticked me because I don't know how they could say hemorrhoids are a disability to where they cannot work.

Disability is a government program and nothing the government does surprises me anymore.

Wow. I am glad I didn't hear that. I would have been yelling at the TV. The VA really annoys me. They are very corrupt and are turning away people who really need help left and right. My ex-husband served overseas for 2 years and he recently decided to try to get help for PTSD. He was turned away by the VA because he waited too long to get help (two years). He actually received a letter stating that the test they ran proved that he did have a problem that required treatment, but they were not going to help him with it. Now he does have health insurance but cannot afford to get all of the treatment he really needs. I guess that is what you get for putting your lif eon the line for your country.

That sounds so typical. Yeah we know you have a problem but we aren't going to help. They should do better for those who fight for all of us. There is no reason for them not too.

I know what you mean believe me. I know my sister has been fighting for years now to get hers and I just started the battle. I know it will take time and even then it won't be much.

I dont think that we can ever do enough for the vets. I think so many have not been given whats really fair..Like the vietnam vets? I just dont see why they cant have a healthy balance and be fair to everyone??? Who do they pick to make these decisions? shhhehhhhh They make things so much more complicated then what they have to be?

hello from a vertrans wife: While there may be something wrong with this system, it is a system that is set up to care for its returning veterans. While I agree that hemmoriods are not a major health problem if a soilder went into the service and did not have them than comes home with them it is covered, its part of what the goverment dose for its service people. Say for example you have hemorrids and headaches you may get like 1% for the hemmorids and 2% for the headaches now as far as the money for this goes you wont get much. they pay on an overall health rateing and this just might be included in the overall rateing. Also if the hemmorids can be removed than the payment for them would be stopped. It is a very messed up system and I know because I live with this nightmae on a daily basis, but it is a private system to care for the men and women who have fought for this country, so that whatever health problems they have are cared for.

It is a messed up system that the Government should be making sure is run right. Even if all they are getting is partial disability there is still no reason for it. If they are 98% healthy they wouldn't be eligible for other disability like with Social Security, why should they get it with the VA?

OH MY! That is unbelievable! I can not believe they would issue out disability for things as trivial as that! You can still work with those I'd imagine! Millions of our tax dollars...and like you said that could go to people who really need it. What a shame!

That's a same that they would give dissibility for people because of this when there are some people as a matter of fact a girl i know that is a little bit youner then I am that also has multiple sclrosis and they won't help her out but yet they will help people out like this.

i have a relative who's neither a vet or on disability for it-but i can say hemorroids can become deadly. he has a chronic problem that required lancing/surgery (ouch),and treatment for infection. but as far as run of the mill hemorroids/STD's.. no,i don't think they should get disability for that either.i'm kind of surprised they allow collection for that.

You know I actually started to really laugh out loud about this?? I laughed simply because I couldn't believe the idiocy of it all...what next...pay disability for people with hangnails?? I mean is this government serious?? Gee why doesn't the government approve disability for ALL people with hemmorrhoids or STD's I just bet people aren't getting proper medical attention or disability for those who worked in and around ground zero at the world trade center site...I have heard so many stories about THESE people who are genuinely suffering with serious detrimental side effects and aren't getting diddly squat. How the hell can this government justify this...veterans with real true and serious injuries from war as opposed to a simple case of STD's or hemmorhoids --This is really sick..it really is.

Believe me I know. I know VA Disability is different from Social Security but still it's insane. The thing is from reading it this has been going on for years, it's not a current thing but only one that has just recently been brought up to light. As you and I both know there are many who do deserve it but can't seem to while obviously others who don't deserve it get it easily.
