Hi I run Windows XP with Internet Xplorer 7 and windows defender. I use Windows Firewall. I have a D-Link Router for my broadband.
Under LAN or High Speed is:
Local Area Connection
Connected, Firewalled
NVIDEA nForce Networking Co.
1394 Connection
Connected Firewalled
1394 Net Adaptor
This is all OK
But whenever there is an update to Windows defender 'software distribution service 2.0' I then lose my internet connection (Dial up is still OK)
Internet connections then shows.
LAN or High Speed
Local Area Connection
Connected, Firewalled
1394 Net Adaptor
I then have to do a system restore to the last time all OK, today that was back to the 6th June
Please can someone help me, this has been happening sine 31st May

i havent tried that setup coz i dont use windows defender but maybe this can help you. put an exception in your firewall for windows defender or turn off your firewall when updating.
that also could be an issue from your router , maybe the port handling the update is set to close. hope this helps ;)

The updates are on automatic at the moment so I take it I would have to change them to manual !! What exactly would I have to put in the firewall for an exception for defender.
I dont really understand about the port handling what exactly would I need to do - I am not really a computer whiz kid
