Bible Thumpers who don't read the Bible

My daughter was born again a few years ago when she was in junior high, obviously with my blessing. I was Catholic and then began going to a Protestant church. In both churches I did a lot of work in Sunday School and the youth ministries, amongst other things, as did my husband. I was also raised with a Pagan grandma who taught me how to cast a mean "spell" if I wanted. (Pagans will get my joke). I've also been atheist for brief periods. I believe we're all on a journey of some sort, and should respect other people who are on their journey. What drives me up a wall is people who preach and aggressively try to force their beliefs on you, convinced you're "wrong"...I'm speaking specifically of prosylitizing Christians... In the past few days, I've seen a discussion on here where everyone seems to believe there's no way they mention the keys of heaven (the pearly gates) being given to Peter in the Bible. It clearly says that in Matthew 16:19, which you can check yourself at http://www.BibleGateway.com or at http://www.bible.cc/matthew/16-19.htm where the statement from many translations is listed on one page. I appeal to anyone exploring Christianity, or any religion, to read for yourself what it says and to go even further and study various discussions involving the interpretations. I know many people say "God didn't allow it to be misinterpreted," but come on people, we've all see the painting of Moses with horns..hahaha...those same people translated documents we are still reading and trusting. I'd also like to say there is a what appears to be homosexual relationship described between Jonathan, son of Saul and David (he who slayed the giant Goliath) in 1 Samual. Again, I invite you to do your own studies on this and certainly not trust a word I say if this means something to you, and I found a well-written piece at: http://home.earthlink.net/~globalage1/id113.html I will ask that you honestly explore your inner feelings before responding to this and if you feel you cannot respond in a rational, polite way that would continue the discussion, without it becoming a flame war, then don't... Because one of the main reasons people are turning their backs on Christianity is that they are tired of being attacked by people who believe **they** know all the answers.

There are many different versions of the bible out there and people interpert scriptures differently, that is probably why there are so many different versions of one scripture.

For sure, that's why I try to ensure that what I post is in a variety of accepted versions and include links that lead to the quotes in many, many different versions.

Oh, for sure. You can argue in two directions with many things in the Bible (maybe most) especially if you start to go back and dig at the meanings of the original Arabaic, which Jesus spoke, then take into account the inaccuracies of translating that spoken language into Hebrew or Greek, then Latin and English. I live my life in the "gray" but I love to debate, and have people come back and give me a credible source that says something else, etc. I hate the, "well god says it and that's that" discussions.

I don't understand what you are getting at? Are you saying that the Keys of the Kingdom of heaven given to Peter are the Pearly Gates in Heaven? Are you saying tha David and Jonathan were homosexuals?

I am not making any conclusions (the Pearly Gates was a reference to another discusttion on MyLOT). I'm just telling people to read it before they pass an opinion. I don't think that's too much to ask. If you're going to do a book review you should read the book.
