Does marriage counseling really work?

Does marriage counseling really help couples find amicable solutions? Or, does it only add to the problem? What's your experience with counseling? Did it work for you? Or, did you end up in a failed relationship anyway? I've heard some people complaining that their marriage counselor took sides in the marital dispute, and wasn't fair at all. Or, purposely dug up past events for the couple to relive so that the sessions would go on longer. Did you have this experience?

Sure I believe so. A few of friends have done this and they swear by it. I don't need because myself and my wife talk instead of arguing which helps to keep fights down. Kudos, ~Joey

i'm not married so i don't have any marriage counseling experience but it does not seem like such a good idea to me... telling a total stranger my most intimate things? not for me. i prefer having a quiet nice chat with my partener about the things that i don't like and find a solution together...
