Morning anxiety...how to manage?

When I get really stressed, my anxiety really hits me in the morning. I can usually fall asleep ok at night, but I will walk up at 4am or so and be be able to get back to sleep....my mind is just racing with "future thoughts" and I can't get back to sleep. I usualy end up getting up and trying to read, watch TV or go on the computer, butreally what I need to do is learn how to get back to sleep and banish these negative thoughts. Does anyone with similar issues have any suggestions or things that have worked for them?

If you can not fall asleep, maybe you feel boring and depressed,if you are hard to fall asleep,I think you should not compei yourself to sleep,it may make you feel even much worse. You can get up and take some deep breath, have a walk in your room,do not think too much things. you slso can read some articles you like, then maybe you will feel better. The last but not the least, you can drink a cup of warm milk before you go to sleep,it is good for you to fall asleep as quickly as possible. Do not be anverous, take it easy, everything will be okay.

Falling asleep is usually ok, it's staying asleep that's the problem. But thank you for your suggestions about reading I find that does often help.

Ok, you're my twin seperated at birth....lol. I am the exact same way. I have no trouble falling asleep but often wake up between 3-4 in the morning and start worrying about what's to happen during the next day or two. For some reason it seems worse at night. I also tend to feel a bit down on Sundays....have always been this way, not entirely sure why.

It's awful isn't it? I usually end up watich TV or reading...that sometimes helps. Yeah, Sunday's are also kind rough for me too. I know I spend a good portion of my day doing chores, alundry, and getting ready for what the week has to hold.

wow - do you have a very stressful job? when i did, I'd have nightmares sometimes but not wake up at 4am to worry. I think you need to relax, and tell yourself that there's no point waking up early to think about stuff since there's nothing you can do about it at that point. I only worry about stuff when i get into the office and then i can actively try to resolve problems. Read a survey that 90% of the things we worry about are things over which we have no control. So the thing to do is relax and enjoy! Worry not, for each day has cares enough of its own.

It's not work so much as it's home life, I have a big move coming up and a big change in my life. I think it's that. And you are right the stuff I wirry about is pretty pointless....but it's hard for me to quiet my mind. I guess the plus side is I get some good mylotting in when I am awake :-)

yeah, I understand what you are going through. Make sure you stay hudrated, that can help with the headaches. I've started getting up and watching some TV, or going on mylot. That seems to help distract me from worrying a bit. Also sometimes I count to...well however high it takes me to fall back asleep. Sometimes it helps, and others times, not so much..but at least it's something to try.

I also face similar problem like you. But, not everyday. Whenever it happens, what I do is I get up and work on computer for some time or read some book. Then after some time (within 1 hour or so) I will start feeling sleepy and then I go to sleep. This helps me.

That happens to me too actually. From my reading I think it's your body's "fight or flight" response to the stress. My mom is a bit more susceptable to stress, my dad is more calm...guess who I take after :-)

Make time in your morning for relaxation, breathing exercises, and/or meditation. Create a "safe place" in your home, perhaps right in your bedroom, where you know you may relax or meditate for 10 to 15 minutes. It just needs to be a small corner, where you might put a comfortable pillow for sitting and a few calming objects such as photos or candles. After you regularly use this spot for meditation or relaxation, you will associate the spot with a feeling of calm and safety.

Might it be that you slept too much? If you have too much rest prior, it might explain why you woke up early - because the body has already rested sufficiently. Or might it be some real distractions that woke you up but which you thought it was your own morning anxiety cause? You might wish to consider NLP. That would cost some bucks though. You can read more about Neuro-linguistic programming at e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-linguistic_programming .

Well since I haven't been sleeping much I don't know if I'm rested. I feel pretty tired... I've never heard of NLP but it sounds interesting in the wiki-atricle you gave me. Perhaps I can learn more about it online or through books.

I too have this issue when I wake up. I find it really sucks, because I'm feeling on edge and that, even when I have taken my Anxiety meds. For some reason I always feel nervous, like someone is watching me or get a phone call about bad news, or bills that I have to pay in the mail and stuff like that... I'm always worrying about that sorts.

I usually have more difficulty going to sleep when I am stressed, rather than staying asleep. But I do also occasionally wake up in the middle of the night/morning, hours before I need to be up, and can't get back to sleep. Generally, I will give myself a limit. If I'm not back asleep by a certain time, I might as well just get up. Until then, I will try to focus on something different. One technique that will sometimes work is to focus on putting each part of your body to sleep. Start at your toes, work your way up your legs to your lower torso, then skip to your arms (starting at the fingers), work your way back to your torso, and ultimately to your head. I find that by the time I get to my arms, I'm usually drifting off. If nothing else, it does give you something else to think about, which may be all that you need to get back to sleep, as it takes your mind off the worrying.
