genuinely need some inputs for buying a car

Hi Guys, I never owned a car probably that may be one of the reason I have very little knowledge about cars. I am planning to buy a car in UK as hopefully I will get my license once I pass my practical test. I have searched a lot in many websites but there are no clearcut suggestions. I am totally confused which car to go for like: 1) A new one or old one. 2) A Japanese make, German or American. 3) A diesel one or petrol or even new hybrid or electric ones. 4) A car with lesser depreciation and better resale value. 5) A hatchback, saloon or open roof etc. 6) A car which will have lesser insurance and road tax. 7) Two door, 4 or 5 doors etc. My requirement is to use mostly in cities and occassionally on motorways. I need a car with some space to keep the luggage as well. Any suggestion in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
