What was your dream job as a child?

As children, we often have expanded ideas of what we can do when we grow up. Did you ever get to do your childhood dream job, or did it fall by the wayside as you grew up? Was it something that you would still like to do? I had lots of dreams as a child, but the two that really stuck with me throughout my childhood were to be a writer and a doctor. Well, I didn´t like school enough to become a doctor, but I did study and become a paramedic and worked as such for two years before coming down here to Guatemala. As for being a writer, guess what my job is now? I´m a freelance writer! :D I guess dreams sometimes do come true. Not as glamorous as it seemed when I was 8, though. lol.

Well, when I was 5, one day I saw the picture of an aeroplane and asked my mom, who flies the plane. She said,"a pilot". That's it. I said I want to be a pilot. But, I don't know what happened over the years. But later I changed my mind and said, I want to be a cricket player. That didn't happen cos I had no support from the family. Then I wanted to be an actor/singer. No support again. I do sing well, but not professionally. But, I did get some part of my desire to come true by becoming a theatre artist. Today I am a part-time theatre artist as well as a yogi. Don't know what's in store for me next.

Not supporting your kids is really one of the most damaging things a parent can do, I think. Good to hear that you are a theatre artist, though! What is a yogi?

I am doing and have been doing my two dream jobs for the past 18 years. I had always dreamed of being a teacher and a mother. With motherhood, in that same very instant I also became teacher. It is as wonderful and challenging and rewarding and fulfilling as I expected it to be. only it does not pay the bills quite as well ;)

Congrats on making your dream come true! Funny, I always swore I didn´t want kids when I was a child, and now I have 2! I´m pretty happy with my boys, though.

When I was a kid, I had no big dream in particular. At a very young age, I'm undecided! I just say what other kids say. Like when my sister said she'd like to be a doctor, as every one does that time, I'd also say that I want to become a doctor someday. But it doesn't really come from the heart. True enough, when I reached the point when I had to decide which course to take in college, I didn't have any particular course in mind. I took the entrance exam in Architecture and AB, but I landed in AB Communication Arts. Now I'm in a job not really related to my course, and I know now what I really like. It took me 32 years to figure it out, but I'm glad. I'm such a late bloomer! :) Anyways, I've always loved to draw and to paint ever since. Now I do layout and designs in the computer and it's become a home based job that I get decent earnings from. Now, hat's what I'm really passionate about.

That´s great that you figured out what you love! I don´t think it is a big problem that it took you a while, you got to do other things in the meantime!

Glad you got your dream. I wanted to be a librarian when I was a child. I could think of nothing better than to be surrounded by books all day. I didn't have many friends growing up and I read a lot. So you could say that books were my friends. Now I have a Masters of Biology and I teach community college. So I guess I am pretty far away from my childhood dream.

I agree with there being nothing better than being surrounded by books! My mom used to go to second hand stores and buy dozens of books for a couple of dollars and we practically had a library in our house. Every room had two or three bookshelves and she built floor to ceiling bookshelves that ran the length of our hall, full of our books, so they featured pretty heavily in my childhood as well . . . which is probably why I wanted to write. :D

Yes i had strong wishes to become a fighter pilot but my qualification and my physical health did'nt allowed me to become a pilot then i thought to become a successful business man because business is an unlimited field and having different opertunities to earn allot of money so it requires allot of money as well .... so for now i am not having much capital now to invest these days hopefully i will make my second dream to become truth INSHA ALLAH ..........

I also wanted to be a pilot in my teens. But I didn´t make it either, it is REALLY expensive to take flying lessons. I got through ground school, but never had the cash to get in the air more than a couple of times. It sounds like a good idea to focus on business. There are plenty of areas where you can start a business and not spend too much cash.

Well, there´s nothing wrong with raising 5 kids! That is a really tough job, perhaps the hardest of them all. :) I think a chauffeur license ought to count toward your dream. I count my paramedic work as a medical thing. Not quite my dream, but almost! You should do the same, but I´ve read about race car driving schools where you go for a day and they teach you fast driving techniques and you get to zoom around the race track. It sounds like a lot of fun and it is just for a day or two. I think it would be awfully expensive, though.

I have had so many dreams as a child but the most remarkable is my dream of becoming an architect - and that never changed until now. When I was a kid, I would draw structures and skyscrapers using my school pencils and my notebooks - I am just a little sad that I never got to keep all those things. Now that I am in college, I am enrolled as a civil engineering student and I will immediately proceed to architecture afterwards - I guess my dream job is set to come true in my future. Wish me luck!! Cheers!!

When I was a child I had a friend whose father was amarine biologist. He was often off working long term on ships doing research projects, and she spent part of her childhood in Hawaii. I thought it would be the most wonderful job under the sun. I never pursued it, but now I live by the beach and see as much marine life as I like!

Sounds like you have the best of both worlds, lots of marine life without having to study for years. :D I envy you, I used to live on an island in Canada and went to work (the paramedic job) every day on a boat. I really, really, really miss the ocean.

Well, when I was younger my best friend and I used to think or imagine that we would be archeologists. That was my dream job back in the day. What a far cry from that I turned out to be.

I really want to become a nurse when I was still a child. My brothers and sisters and my close relatives as well as family friends teased and call me "the nurse". When I was a freshman in college, I did not take up the course because I was delayed in enrolling so i just took up commerce. Then I forgot all about nursing. Now, when I became a wife and a mother, I want to go schooling in another medical course. I think our dream changes as time goes by.
