Government Of the People, By the People and For the People...

One of the biggest myths in America is that We the People are the government. Our government is Of the People, By the People and For the People, but the government itself is not The People. "Of the People" because our government officials are elected and appointed from the general population, not from a group of "Nobles" or any other class distinction. "By The People" because each elected official is elected by those the person in the position will represent. "For the People" because all elected officials are supposed to work in the best interests of We the People. Nowhere does it say that We the People are the government. We, as a Constitutional Republic, elect officials to speak for and represent us. We need to hold those we elect accountable, not just shrug our shoulders and say, "well, WE are the government, so it's OUR fault.

One thing that always makes me laugh are the fools who complain that the government or a particular president is not following the "will of the people"...that is not what they were elected to do in the first place. People keep forgetting that we are not a democracy, we are a Representative Republic. Our elected officials make the decisions for us in how the country is run. Our only chance to change anything comes at election time, and maybe with emails and letters about issues to our representatives, although that is pretty much useless because each state only has a little voice compared to the whole. People claim that the government doesn't listen, yet they keep voting the same people in every election. Our vote is the only real voice that we have, o[pinion polls mean nothing and really do nothing more than muddy the water on the issues. If you don't like what the government does, then vote the current crop out and go with an all new Congress...otherwise they need to stop complaining.

Excellent reminder ParaTed. It is "We the People" who elect them, and we can just as easily toss 'em. We should never assume that another citizen is voicing OUR opinion. Don't leave it up to someone else, if you're gonna' gripe about it later. E-mails are free! Most cell phone calls are free! We all need to let our elected representatives know how we expect them to vote. There may be times that our perspective is in the minority, but unless we voice our opinions, our representatives are just going to vote the way they want to vote. They can't read our minds. And, we can't hold their feet to the fire unless we let our wishes be known!

AMEN! If the people was the government we'd be busy voting on every decision. Imagine that! We whine about elections held every four years. Can you imagine having to go to the computer every day to read all the proposals and vote on each one and then know that most of the people voting haven't a clue what they are voting on? But you'd have to deal with the consequences anyway. Of course, there are still lots of folks who don't really know what they are voting on every four years, too.
