Are your kids really slackers...

I was listening to some moms talk earlier about how their kids don't like school and homework, and just refuse to do well in school. And, I wondered if maybe the problem wasn't a sheer dislike, but more the idea that the kids don't understand the material involved. Maybe kids really aren't slackers when it comes to school work. Maybe they just can't read well enough or have the basic understanding of the materials involved. What's your view on this.

Yes it could be true. In some cases. I know from witnessing it both ways. I grew up with it too. It came easy for me, but two of my sisters struggled. My mom thought it was because they were slackers. One sister was very easily distracted. SHe is very ditzy, and the other sister had learning disabilities that were not confronted or corrected. I think a conference with a teacher or guidance counselor is good. There are so many options nowadays for geting help to students. People are just not educated about enought I guess. Maybe if the parent is thinking the kid is a slacker, they should look at themself first and se if the are slacking in keeping up with the childs learning.

I think that is often the case. One of my sons was doing very badly in some of his classes. After a conference with his teachers, I got him put into a study skills class where he gets some extra help with some of the work that he has trouble with. His grades went from D's and E's up to A's and B's this year. He just needed the extra help.
