Do men look better casual or elegant?

Today I'd say is an age of casual clothes for men. Elegance exists, but it is little seen on a daily basis. Of course, there are elegant celebrities (actors, musicians &c.), and models; but in general, guys favour the hyper-casual look. Do you think this is a sad fact? Perhaps you disagree. Would you like to see a return of male elegance? Or is male concern for clothes vain and foolish? I'd like to hear opinions on this matter from both men and women. Let's talk attire...

I like the elegant look as a change from the evryday...but if the guy is to go casual, it has to be well put together too - a nice pair of jeans and t-shirt that shows off the biceps - not just any old ratty t-shirt.

Elegant is very attractive, but not very practical, and most folks (esp. men) don't seem to have the patience for it. I like casual, but only if it's neat casual... no wrinkled clothes, holes in jeans, untucked dress shirts, etc.

You're right. Things have changed so much in the last half century or more. Formality was the norm in the early 50s...suits and ties, and even hats. Then came the rise of tee shirts and jeans culture, possibly initiated by movie stars such as Brando and Dean.

I think there is two points to be made. Do we lack occasions to dress formal? Today you can go almost everywhere in jeans. When is there an occasion to wear a tuxedo for a man or an elegant dress for a woman? Second point is, one can not generalize. There is guys who really look fancy in a cut. But can you imagine a man like John Wayne or Hoss Cartwright to wear a black suit? Yes, I`d love to see more elegance. The real formal wear is attached to a certain expensive lifestyle, there is no use in buying a tuxedo if you do not have the money to go to places where it is being worn. But maybe you look at them sloppy types and wonder if they just couldn`t dress a bit better? I think this is what the wives of these men think, too.

That is true, these days, no one looks at you strangely if you turn up to occasions once seen as formal in casual clothing. Fifty years ago, that was not the norm. I even remember a time when for a man to wear shorts in summer was seen as unusual. Nowadays, most men wear them.
