How Do You Cope With Long Distance Relationships?

It's been a month since my husband went back to the US while we stayed behind for an extended vacation. I'm going nuts and I miss him so badly. It seems the kids and I will be staying for at least a month more and I'm counting the days till we get together again. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for couples who are apart for longer periods of time. Do you get used to it? How do you keep the romance alive?

Yes, distance is really a hindrance to a relationship. I don't think I can ever get used to it. I can endure all hardships in a relationship but what I can't tolerate is the distance.

It is hard being away from someone you love, but you can make it through. Before my husband and I got married, we were apart most of the time. He was stationed 1100 miles from where we are both from. We went on three dates when we first got together. He came home again for Christmas 4 months later, and was home for a week. We got engaged then. The next time he came home was 5 months later, and it was for our wedding. It was really hard to be away from him so long, but it made it even better when we were together again. Now he's been told he will be deploying soon, so we will be apart for a while again. We have a baby now, so it will probably be even harder, but I'm sure we will get through it.

When we lived in Rhodesia my wife would take the kids over to Scotland to see the family for a couple of months while I worked to pay for the trip. haha Well sometimes it was work and sometimes I was called up into the army - but whatever, we were parted. I missed them badly but managed to get through it ok. No problem keeping the romance alive - the home comings were great!!

I have been in this situation many times. In the initial days after I got married,I stayed apart from my husband for 5 months and then again 6 months the following year.there were issues like my passport not being available on time,my husband having to join work before my passport application was submitted, etc etc.after that i vowed never to stay away from him for long periods because I do miss him and now my daughter won't stay without him either.
