Call them mason jars or ball jars, there are so many uses for them outside of canning or putting up preserves. One cool thing I did with older jars was to nail the lid to a rafter in the basement then screw the jar into it. I have nuts, bolts, screws, washers and nails in them so I never have to hunt for them when I need them. They are also great if you are into crafting; store buttons, embellishments, blades and more in them so they stay clean and away from kids. What do you use your glass jars for? Do you ever recycle other glass jars from pickles, jelly or soup?

is there a special way to treat these jars before putting in preserves?? because i've been dying to know!! btw.. your idea is really cool! i lost one of the lids on of my jars.. decorated it with glass paint marker.. tied some ribbons on the rim and made it into a pen/pencil holder.. nothing crafty.. but it was fun!

If you are going to get into home canning or making preserves, you do have to boil and sanitize the jars or you will end up with mold inside the jars. Here are a couple links you can check out to get you started: http://southernfood.about.com/od/canning/Home_Canning.htm http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/nutrition/DJ0516.html

i usually do put food in them..but i have one or two with laundry soap, flavor packets and whatnot in them. i check them every now and then tho, because the humidity is so high it'll scrag the lids if you don't keep an eye on them to change it out.
