solar powered cars

why do we not have solar powered cars?? i remember YEARS ago a college contest or something and these guys made a solar powered car that they drove all of the way across austrailia or wherever. so i know it can be done. i would love to have one.

The oil companies have a say in this kind of thing. That would cut into their profits and that scares them. Finally hybrid cars are coming out and that is a start. Will have to see if we have to run out of oil before serious distribution occurs. I want a hybrid hummer h3. That would be great to have.

I think solar powered cars is great only during the day...so perhaps...a car that runs sole on rechargable battery is better...so you incorporate the solar panel to charge the battery and makes your car run on daytime and let the fully charged battery run the car at night...and what if the battery discharcged and you have not yet reached your destination? and there is no elctrical outlet where you can plug your car to recharge the battery? that's when you will need a back-up gas-powered engine, so the engine of the car can run either by solar energy, a battery or gasoline...aint that so cool? i think such car is widely aveilable already it is called hybrid cars like Toyota Prius...but Toyota prius does not run on Solar energy. It runs only on Battery and Gasoline.
