Hmm. I don't think reading the Bible makes everyone a better person. In fact, I've known quite a few people for whom reading the Bible only gave them excuses to behave badly towards others. As in "Oh I can find a random verse in the Old Testament that condemns these types of people, so I can now beat the crap out of them in the name of God!" Overall, I think the Bible, just like most religious texts or ideas, can have either a negative or a positive effects on a person based on how that person looks at it, or whether it's the right belief for them. I know some people that are better people because of the Bible, and some that are worse, just like any other religion that I can think of.

I don't need to, I already have beliefs that cause me to be a good person, but thanks! =) As for reading or practicing, it really depends on what parts of the Bible you are talking about. The type of people I was referring to did believe they were practicing what the Bible taught.

Yes it is unfortunate that people take the bible out of context. I wish it wasn't so. Those kind of people bring a lot of damage to the family of God. Hopefully those people are learning and finding their way and soon will see that they are not being good stewards of Gods word. I think the important thing is to recognize that it isn't the bible or religion that makes some people act mean or violent towards others. These are propable people that have not accepted the God of the Bible in the first place and are on their own agenda to use the bible as a tool to manipulate the people around them to get what they want. Those are not true christians. Those are the people that the Bible says when they stand before God at the end of their life. God will say I never knew you! I dont' want God to say to me He never knew me. So I read the bible and ask God to teach me by the power of His Holy Spirit all about Him so that I act appropriatly on this earth to glorify Him that others may know that He is the true and real living God!

I believe in what you said that the world would be a better world if all the people read the bible. I just noticed that whenever I start my day reading the bible, I become a better person. Basically, I'm a good person but I have lots of weaknesses like being irritable and etc. But when I start my day with the Word of God, I become more patient and more tolerant to the mistakes of others. I guess its also because you are more at peace if you read God's word and you're also reminded of the goodness in life and God's graciousness to you. If all people will be less irritable like me when they read the bible, then this world would definitely be a more peaceful world!

Amen antonio! Yes, the Bible is God's Holy Word and everyone not only needs to read it, but let the Holy Spirit speak to them thru God's Word. Some people over the ages have tried to destroy God's Word, but it is still here! It will never die and it will remain until Christ returns! Yes, the world would be a much better place if more and more people would turn to Christ! God bless!

People will find what they "want" to find (even if subconsciously) in the bible. If they want an excuse to be borderline abusive with their children, or to invade the private lives of others and judge them harshly, they can find justification for it there. If they want to get a pat on the back for helping someone in need, or to be let off the hook when they murder someone, they can get it from other parts of the bible. There are some beautiful psalms, stories and parables in the bible, however, I believe the bible (especially the NT and the Jesus fable) is simply rewritten mythology. I believe the whole thing is a "blasphemous injustice" to ANY deity or higher power, and was twisted to build and force a following...in part for politcal reasons.
