There are a lot of hedge funds and all have other classifications.
A hedge fund is a fund who invest money in variable things; it could be currency,stocks,gold,soja beans,corn,oil etc and do this mostly via derivatives and arbitrage,some are going short on things they expected a decline on.
The difficulty about a hedge fund is they are little transparent and you don't really know what they are really doing,it's not my cup of tea.
Though sometimes I make a hedge by myself when I buy or write options on stocks ,but there at least I know what I'm doing and you can't tell that by hedgefunds.
