Every July growing up we had a snowball fight. My mom saved a big black trashbag full of snow in the freezer, and in july she would bring it out and we would have a snowball fight in our bathing suits! It was great!! What kind of summer traditions did you have growing up??

What an absolutely awesome tradition! I can't imagine how thrilling that must have been, to be playing and sweating on a hot July day and then be able to cool off by playing with snow! Your mom was so creative! As for summer traditions at my house, it was just playing outside and a yearly trip to the beach!

It was great, we loved it!! haha! I havent done it yet with my kids, our freezer is too small! Once we get a big freezer i'm starting though, as long as we are living where there's snow!!! Cant beat going to the beach!!

That sounds so cool! Literally—snow in July- What a neat mom you have- I hope you keep some of that fun going on for your 4 soon to be 5 boys- Nothing like that- every year we camped out a lot in the back yard- pop-up camper-, collected lightning bugs, had bonfires most nights- Just fun summery things- We do the same now- minus the pop-up- hopefully soon- We camp in a tent in the back yard- setting it up soon—school isn’t out yet in NY.

What a creative and fun idea! When we were younger we would always look forward to the Slip 'N Slide when the summer months came around. And despite our many summers playing with it, we never broke an ankle. I've heard of people, mostly adults, really getting hurt on those things!

what a fantastically fun mother you had! such ingenuity - and perseverance to hold on to the stuff for that long. of course if you were from upstate ny it may not have been that long, huh? I recall a fourth of july we spent at Watkin's Glenn and it snowed! haha. growing up we always traveled every summer vacation, traveled and camped.

Wow, I love that. Where did your mom get that idea from? How was the snow, was it frozen? My son has put a snow ball in the freezer and it always gets frozen solid. Maybe he should of put it in something. The only thing I can think of that I did was go to my cousins house for two weeks every summer and she would come to my house for another two weeks. We lived about an hour away from each other, so we didn't see each other too often and we were only 10 months apart in age. Those were good times.

Hmm no? I think she just put it in there loosely in a bag (didnt pack it). Then she took it out and it was fluffy and nice just like when it was fresh! I dont know where she came up with it, but I cant wait to use it with my boys. :) I went to my cousins house for 4 weeks mostly every summer or longer! It was nice!

Gee - how large WAS that freezer that your mother was able to dump a trash bag full of snow into it? Well - even in the heat of the summer, I'd HATE to get clobbered by one of those snowballs, because it would be TOO cold - even if it was too hot to be comfortable. Summer traditions varied for me. For me, when I first moved out into the sub-urbs, my mother used to babysit for the family who lived two houses away from us. At the time, I was almost 11, & she was 9. That REALLY started rumors flying when I started the school year. Then the first 3 years when I was in high school, most of that time was spent over a band-mate's house trying to - uh - get neighbors calling the cops on us for making too much of what they called "noise."

That would be fun! We wouldn't have ever had room for snowballs in our freezers, though when I was growing up. We had an upright and a chest, but my uncles are all farmers, and my dad is a hunter, so we always had a lot of meat and veggies and stuff frozen. Our main tradition growing up was to go to all the battlefields around. My dad is a big history buff, so we would always take day trips to about 4 different Civil War battlefields. When we drove to Montanna (from Missouri) we stopped at a few different historical museums and places. That's about it, though. With my son, we probably aren't going to have any real summer traditions, except maybe to go see grandparents, since my husband is most likely going to make a career out of the Air Force.

that would totally be so much fun!...did the snowballs melt fast? i dont know if i would have enough room in my freezer to do that!! we go to a weekend camp every june up in norhtern Ontario (canada) with a bunch of people from our church (twas last weekend and a lot of fun) we have a church picnic coming up this sun, we go to the beach a lot every summer during the summer, stuff like that so that is making traditions for my kids... but when i was growing up, my dad pulled the 6am to 2 shift (he was a chef @ a correctional facility) and my mom used to have the picnic ready and as soon as he got home, we headed off to our local watering/swimming (not drinking lol) hole and had supper there...we did that ALL the time when i was little...maybe thats why i love the beach so much!
