I am currently using Windows XP and Mandriva Spring as a dual boot system. My system is using seperate hard drives for each operating system, but you can easily use the same hard drive if you wish. The easiest way is to install Windows first, which is convenient because you already have it installed. You can overwrite the partition used for Windows 98 or repartition the section and use it. In the majority of cases either GRUB or LILO will be installed for you at the finish. (These are the sections that will boot the system for you) There is no reason not to run numerous operating systems at the same time, providing of course that you have enough hard drive space.

yes you can if your hdd is big enough for both of them.

well yes. i have openSUSE and winxp on my system. My windows system shows i have 35 gb hard dsik capacity while linux shows 40 gb. the problem is coz windows doesnt recognise ext3 partitions. then my c drive is ntfs and my linux can only read ntfs drives not write to it. but a project is on, which will enable writing to ntfs drives as well. cpu speed wasnt affected but there are other compatibility issues to be taken care of.

If your questions is to use XP and Lixux at the Same sytem, but not simultaneously, then Its very easily. You can just install them at different partitions and choose the one you want to use at the startup. This will not affect the system speed, performance etc. But if your question is to install and use both XP and Linux SIMULTANEOUSLY, then there are special softwares called Virtualisation Softwares, that can help you. But you will see a degradation in the Performance, speed of your system, since both the OS will use the RAM available, resources etc. Think about that. Hope this helps you.

I am not what do you mean with at same time, if you are meaning about have installed both in the same computer it is possible and easy, I have windows xp and Ubuntu Linux , but you need to install windows first and then install Ubuntu Linux or any distribution of linux; with Ubuntu you can make the extra partition but I can say you need to have care of it because you can delete your windows accidentally. when you are installing Ubuntu there is a option for install a boot manager so you will can choose the operating system that you want to start and it don't make any difference in your computer, but if you install a new distribution of Linux you need to have enough RAM in your computer anyway if you are using windows xp I think you will not have problem with memory.
