If my father is diabetic then should I avoid sugar to prevent diabetes, because it is supposed to be hereditary problem. If I don't take sweet things or sugar then will I be spared.

It is more than just sugar you need to avoid...anything with a lot of carbohydrates will raise sugar levels. I am insulin dependent and I have to take one unit of insulin for every ten carbs I eat. So watch those crabs!

Eating sugar is not what causes diabetes. To try to keep from developing the disease you need to do several things. Keep your weight down. Being overweight can bring on diabetes much sooner than if you keep your weight down. But, I know skinny people who have diabetes. Keep your carbohydrate consumption down. This means starchy vegetables such as corn and dried beans, bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes. Carbohydrates are turned into sugar by your body. You also need to exercise. This will be beneficial in many ways, but it also uses the sugar in your blood as energy. Drink a lot of water. Water helps flush the sugar out of your blood. It also helps to prevent kidney disease.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Even though I am not over weight but I will try to exercise regularly and drink water.

no, its not a guarente. yes, it is hereditray sometimes, basiclly you're more prone to it. if you keep a balanced diet and don't too much and keep your weight normal, you should be able to live your life without diabeties. my father also had diabeties, so does my husband, so my children are at high risk. i still give them sweets. but always in moderation. but the most part is to keep active and keep your weight down.

Thank you, I am sure that if I keep active, and keep my weight under control I should escape. But always eating a balanced diet is very difficult, specially in the wedding season when you have to eat at parties.

it is not necessary that you don't eat sweet things or sugar. you may not know it but you are eating them. don't forget the natural sugar from the fruits and carbohydrates are converted to sugar in your body. it is true that diabetes is hereditary. like in our family, my mother had diabetes, which runs in their family. with my 7 siblings, 4 of them already have diabetes. while me, who is really worried that i might have it, as far as i know i don't have it yet. why should i? when my mother was pregnant with me, did her doctor learned that she has diabetes. so the chances are more with me. but luckily, i haven't got it yet. what i can suggest, is that you watch your diet. just eat as you please. but take it easy on the sweets. and have your blood sugar level monitored every now and then. so t hat you'll know if you already have it or not. actually, you can see it with the color of your urine. if it's dark yellow not the usual color, your blood sugar level is a bit high. so watch it.
