Do you self medicate?

Recently I had another bout with UTI. I hate it but it seems like I am very susceptible to this sickness. To me, this is caused mainly by lack of water intake. I wasn't able to drink my normal water intake during the weekend because I went home to visit my parents and friends. My hometown is a cool place and so my liquid intake was purely coffee and nothing else. By the time I was ready to go back to my own place, I was feeling the symptoms of UTI coming. And it did. Since I have been through a lot of bouts with UTI, I feel that I am an expert in it. So I self-medicated and bought antibiotics without consulting the doctor. I have heard that we should not self medicate and always seek expert help. What can you say about this?

Whenever I have problems like that...whether it is my kidneys, bladder, or urinary tract...I always self medicate first. I don't buy anti-biotics though, I buy cranberry juice. Cranberry Juice has a natural antibiotic in it that works on this type of problem. The only time I see the dr for it, is if the juice doesn't help within a few days! Hope this helps!

Guess I have very low pain tolerance. I thought of curing it the natural way by taking in lots of water and juices but I just can't stand the pain that goes with it. So I resorted to antibiotics knowing full well that it may be dangerous. But I took a lower dosage though just in case and I increased my water intake. I still have to try cranberry juice, I may start now in order to prevent another bout with UTI. Thanks for sharing.

hi We all do at some time or another self medicate. My daughter had this problem a few times. The doctors told me cranberries and cranberry juice help avoid having that problem. Something in the cranberry. Feel better soon.

I would never self medicate with antibiotics. One, they are not to be taken lightly. Your body can build an immune to a type of antibiotics and eventually they won't work at all. If you get UTIs often you should consult a doctor. I have never had one and to get them frequently tells me something else might be going on. Now, I have been told that drinking cranberry juice is good for UTI. That kind of self medication I can accept. Or the occasional pain releiver or sinus decongestant. But not antibiotics.

Yup, that's what I read somewhere. And its probably true. But then again the pain has gone, so I guess my self-medication worked. Thanks for sharing.

I seldom self medicate but if its something that is as serious or painful as UTI, I would always consult my gynecologist for that though I have never ever experienced one. You should be careful in taking in anti-biotics because they have different effects. I suggest that you should consult a doctor before taking any anti-biotics.

I heard that taking unprescribed antiobiotics does have some side effects. I was really afraid of that, but so far I did not feel anything different. Now I am feeling okay, the UTI is gone. But you are right, we should consult doctors before taking any medicine.

I have not been to the dr in several years. I pretty much know what will take care of my problems. I hope you are feeling much better. I am not afraid of drs but just don't see any use for all the meds that they tend to give us for each and every ailment. Then each med has side effects that somewhere down the line will lead to another ailment tha calls for more meds. My husband has UTI's and he drinks lots of cranberry juice, 100% juice, and it clears them up. Plenty of liquids are great for you.

Yep, you're right. I had to increase my water intake to counter my sickness. And I keep away from caffeine laden drinks, which is hard for me because I love my coffee. Anyways, I am feeling better, thank you.

For common illneses like light cough, colds, simple headaches i do self medication, i just take paracetamol and mucolytic which don't need prescription but for other illnesses which i think i need to see a doctor i go directly to the clinic. For UTI if i don't feel too much pain i cure it by myself, drink plenty of water, juices and fresh buko juice (coconut juice) which is very helpful in curing UTI, but there is one time i suffer from pain due to this illness, i immediately consult with the doctor because there are certain degrees of illnesses we need to avoid and have the right medicine to cure it as soon as possible.

Yea, I guess you are right. My UTI was mild so I had the courage to just self-medicate. And I increased my intake of water and fruit juices. Thanks for sharing.

I self medicate when I am ill. I can't afford to pay for a doctors visit, the test that they run, and for the medicine. So if I know what is wrong with me I will take care of the problem myself if I can. The problem with that is where I live you have to have a prescription from a doctor to get antibiotics. One way or another they want as much money as they can get. I don't see anything wrong with what you did. As long as you know that you are on the right treatment why not do it.

Thank you for that. I was feeling a little worried that something wrong will come out of it but guess I did the right thing as I was cured just the same. Now I take precautions to really drink the required amount of water intake. Thanks for sharing.

I try not to self-medicate unless the ailment is a very common one like a headache, slight fever or early symptoms of flu. Sometimes I also self-medicate because I feel awful and it is late in the night and there are no clinics open. But I will still try and see a doctor if my ailment does not improve after a day or two. It is not advisable to be your own doctor, and start giving yourself antibiotics or other kinds of medicines. Usually the doctor will prescribe a certain dosage applicable to the severity of your ailment, and requires that you complete the dosage. If you self-medicate, how do you know how much dosage is right or safe? You may try to heal yourself, but in the process you may cause more damage to your own health.

Yup, I guess you are so correct. It's a good thing I was cured- this time. Although I will not probably do it again. For now I strive to be on the preventive. Thanks for sharing.
