Child hazards

Just read this in one of my mommy magazines and thought I should pass it along. Plastic clothes hangers can pose a serious child safety issue to toddlers and small children. A young child may be able to get their head through the middle of the hanger where it will become stuck around the neck. Also, spiral phone cords can pose the same strangulation risk. Please pass this along to other moms that you know.

Thanks for sharing this! This was one of those "mom tips" that I learned years ago but had forgotten all about. We haven't used plastic hangers since my oldest son got one stuck on his head! It didn't go down around his neck but still... Another one we just discovered was with futon sofas. They're really convenient to have but the cross bars on the back and seat have a dangerous spacing if you have little ones in the house. We just got rid of ours after both the 2 year old AND 4 year old stuck their heads into the space and got temporarily stuck.

Thank you so much for sharing this information with us. I had no idea futons could be so dangerous. We were considering a futon sofa recently, and now that's just completely out of the question. My daughter is getting to the stage where she wants to stick her head and arms into almost everything. Maybe once she's older. Awhile back I heard about a little boy (under 12 months) that got the top of his head stuck in the little space between the recliner foot rest and the recliner. His Dad had to saw the chair foot rest open to get him out. He turned out to be OK, but it was still a scary experience for him.

I read that, too (probably the same magazine, I don't remember where it was now). I never thought about that being a problem. My son has a huge head and I'm not sure if it could even fit through a hanger, but I keep them all up out of his reach just in case! I knew that about the phone cord. My son loves to play with them every chance he gets to, so we just have a corded phone in the computer room right on my desk where he can't get to it, and another one in our room. The other phones are all cordless. It's amazing how many things small children can use to hurt themselves, and you never even think anything about it.

Thank you for sharing. I knew about the phone cord, but never thought about plastic hangers being a danger. I'll pass it along.
