Folks, can you jot down your complete national anthem of your country and if possible give a brief explanation if its not in English? I hail from India and my National Anthem is as follows: "Jana-gana-mana-adhinayaka, jaya he Bharata-bhagya-vidhata. Punjab-Sindh-Gujarat-Maratha Dravida-Utkala-Banga Vindhya-Himachala-Yamuna-Ganga Uchchala-Jaladhi-taranga. Tava shubha name jage, Tava shubha asisa mange, Gahe tava jaya gatha, Jana-gana-mangala-dayaka jaya he Bharata-bhagya-vidhata. Jaya he, jaya he, jaya he, Jaya jaya jaya, jaya he!" The meaning of our national anthem is written as below: " Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people, dispenser of India's destiny. Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha, Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal; It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea. They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise. The saving of all people waits in thy hand, thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, victory, victory to thee."

The national anthem of the United States - "The Star Spangled Banner", lyrics written by Francis Scott Key inspired by seeing the flag flying after the successful defense of Fort McHenry in the war of 1812. O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen thro’ the mist of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream ’Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation, Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our Trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Australians all let us rejoice For we are young and free We've golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea: Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare, In history's page let every stage Advance Australia fair, In joyful strains then let us sing Advance Australia fair. Beneath our radiant Southern Cross, We'll toil with hearts and hands, To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands, For those who've come across the seas We've boundless plains to share, With courage let us all combine To advance Australia fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.

i am from the philippines and i can definitely jot down my national anthem which is 'Lupang Hinirang' in our language. the title will be to mean literally the 'chosen land'. our country is the pearl of orient seas. it is the land of our birth and that we are willing to defend it with all our might even if, it could mean sacrificing our last breath for her. for us citizens of our native land, we will always be willing to defend our countries because, this is where we belong to. it is the only one which we have known to be the place where to settle comfortably from birth.

A very interesting topic. Though there is not much to discuss in the topic, it provides a chance to get the lyrics of the national anthems of various countries. By the way, you forget to include a vital point. I mean you should have mentioned about Rabindranath Tagore, the author of this beautiful patriotic song. All the best Urvashi.

Your response is appreciated abroji. Sure, its author is Rabindranath Tagore who also is Asia's first nobel prize for literature.
