Is Vitamin D really a cure for cancer?

I heard something in the newspaper that said vitamin D helps to reduce your risk for cancer? Is this really possible or is it another hyped up study?

cancer is mainly caused by the deficiency of necessary minerals.
so the intake of minerals in their respective quantities can prevent cancer.
vitamins are not concerned with cancers at all.
